mode

Compared to the previous season , extensive changes have been made to the mode with the aim of guaranteeing excitement until the end of the season. As in the previous year, all twelve teams should play a single round. Then the group stage began, for which the teams were divided into three groups of four teams each. The previous table leader should not be assigned to the lighter opponents, as is usual with similar modes, but to the stronger teams. The group distribution was as follows:

Group 1: first, fourth, seventh, tenth,
Group 2: second, fifth, eighth, eleventh,
group 3: third, sixth, ninth, twelfth.

The aim of this group composition should be to bring the field closer together again and to reduce the distance between points. At the end of this intermediate round, the eight teams with the best points reached the championship round, in which the German champions were played in a single round taking the points with them. The four teams with the worst number of points had to go to the relegation round, where two relegated teams were determined in a double round. In order to maintain the tension until the end, the points were not taken here, but all four teams started with zero points, which ultimately meant that the relegation decision for the teams in question was made in only four games.

The new mode of competition fulfilled its primary objective; Championship and relegation issues remained exciting until the end of the season. However, there were considerable doubts about the sporting fairness of this type of competition. This was especially true for SC Riessersee , which after the end of the preliminary round had clearly led by six points, which had melted to just one point after the intermediate round, and which was finally overtaken by the Mannheim ERC in the final round and fell back to third place.
