Aston Villa defended their previous year's title and won the fifth English championship in the club's history with two points ahead of Sheffield United . Of the two promoters Manchester City and Glossop FC , only the club from Manchester could receive the class. Together with Glossop, Burnley FC also had to move into the Second Division . These two clubs should be replaced in the following season by the two second division promoted The Wednesday and Bolton Wanderers .
A total of 394 players were used, with AFC Sunderland with 17 the fewest and Burnley FC with 27 the most players in league games. 134 newcomers opposed 130 footballers, who last came into play in the 1899/1900 season. 28 players were able to play all 34 league games of their club.
The following list lists all players who played in a league game for Aston Villa during the 1899/1900 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.
