Greene County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Bloomfield .

The county is located in southwest Indiana, about 45 km to the west from Illinois and has an area of 1,414 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Clay County , Owen County , Monroe County , Lawrence County , Martin County , Daviess County , Knox County, and Sullivan Counties .

Greene County was formed on January 5, 1821 from parts of Daviess County and Sullivan County. It was named after Nathanael Greene , a general and hero in the American War of Independence .

As of the 2000 census , Greene County had 33,157 people in 13,372 households and 9,360 families. The population density was 24 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.59 percent white, 0.08 percent African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.61 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.81 percent of the population.
Of the 13,372 households, 31.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 58.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers, and 30.0 percent were non-families. 26.5 percent were single households and 12.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.92 people.
24.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24, 28.3 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 93.6 men.
