The Internazionali BNL d'Italia 2012 was a women's tennis tournament of the WTA Tour 2012 in Rome ( Italy ). The WTA Rome is a category Premier 5 tournament and is played on clay. The tournament took place from May 13th to 20th, 2012. The total prize money was 1,652,040 .

Last year's winner Marija Sharapova was able to successfully defend her title. The Italian pairing Sara Errani / Roberta Vinci won in doubles . Last year's winners, Peng Shuai and Zheng Jie , were not registered this year.

The field of participants consisted of 56 individual players, with nine players from the top 10 in the world rankings . Before the tournament, two qualifying rounds were played with 32 participants, eight of which qualified for the main draw. From the German-speaking countries took Angelique Kerber (11) Sabine Lisicki (13) Julia Goerges (29) and Karin Knapp (112) part (in brackets world ranking position at start of the tournament) in the tournament. In doubles, the field also consisted of 56 players.
