John Cannon (born June 21, 1933 in London , † October 18, 1999 in New Mexico ) was a Canadian racing car driver .

Career

John Cannon was born in London and grew up in California , where he began racing. His first racing car was an Elva Courier. At the beginning of the 1960s, it mainly started at small sports car events before turning to the popular CanAm series.

In 1968 he drove a great race at Laguna Seca when he lapped the entire field at least once in the rain and celebrated a clear victory. This success opened the door to monoposto sport for him. In 1969 he started in Formula A. Cannon won three races and finished fourth in the championship. 1970 was followed by promotion to the next higher racing series, the SCCA series, whose championship title Cannon was able to win.

1971 Cannon came to Europe to contest a full season in the Formula 2 European Championship . However, there were no major successes here. In 1971, Cannon also contested his only Formula 1 Grand Prix . BRM entrusted him with a works car, the BRM P153 , so that Cannon could contest the US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen . Three laps behind the winner François Cevert , he finished the race in 14th place.

Cannon drove car races until the late 1970s. He started again in the CanAm series, competed in races in the USAC racing series and in Formula 5000 before retiring into private life after 15 years in racing.

Cannon died in a light aircraft crash in the fall of 1999.
