Geographical location

Lauingen is located in the Swabian Danube Valley in the Bavarian Swabia on the edge of the Swabian Alb . The Danube is, more precisely in the district shortly before Lauingen Faimingen to a lake (Faiminger Reservoir ) dammed. Shortly after the barrage , the Brenz flows into the Danube.

history

Until the church is planted

The place Lauingen emerged from an Alemannic settlement of the 6th century. Lauingen was donated to the Fulda monastery in the 8th century and became a Staufer around 1150. After the death of the last Staufer Konradin , Lauingen fell to the Wittelsbach family . Later the city belonged to the Höchstädt court of the Duchy of Palatinate-Neuburg , whose second residence was Lauingen. Under Count Palatine Ottheinrich , Lauingen became Protestant in 1542 with the Palatinate-Neuburg area.

The Counter Reformation was carried out in 1616/17. During the Thirty Years' War in Lauingen from April 9, 1632 to September 19, 1634, Swedish troops under the generals Gustaf Horn and Bernhard von Sachsen-Weimar were quartered, who tried to rule the towns downstream of the Danube in order to be able to live in Fight for Regensburg to conquer the imperial city of Regensburg .

In 1777 the area became part of the Electorate of Bavaria. Lauingen had a city court with its own magistrate rights.

20th century

From 1944 to 1945 the city was the location of a satellite camp of the Dachau concentration camp . The approximately 3,000 prisoners were mainly used for forced labor in the aircraft production of the Messerschmitt company . The premises of the Ludwigsau J. Feller & Co. cloth factory were also confiscated from Messerschmitt for storage and possibly also for production . Some of the confiscated rooms also housed prisoners. There, as well as in the confiscated, lightless basement rooms (Römer G, 105) of the agricultural machinery factory Ködel & Böhm (today SDF ), as well as in the Birkacherhof barrack camp , harsh and sometimes inhuman living conditions prevailed, from which at least 62 of the prisoners died.

Incorporations

On April 1, 1971, the previously independent community of Faimingen was incorporated. Frauenriedhausen and Veitriedhausen were added on May 1, 1978.

City council

The city council has 24 members. Since the local elections on March 16, 2014 , the seats have been divided into the following lists:

Mayor was Wolfgang Schenk (SPD) from 2004 to 2018, he was the successor of Georg Barfuß (1986-2004) / (Lauinger List / FDP). On March 14, 2010, Wolfgang Schenk was re-elected as mayor with 56.7% of the votes and on March 16, 2014, he prevailed with 63.4% of the votes against his opponent Claudia Stocker (FDP / Liberal Citizens) with 36.6% , with a turnout of around 50%. On June 12, 2018, Wolfgang Schenk collapsed at a public city council meeting and died the following Wednesday night at the age of only 59.

In a runoff election , Katja Müller from the CSU was able to prevail over her opponent, the SPD, with 54.6% of the vote and a turnout of 53.9%, and will in future direct the fortunes of the city.

In the Faimingen district there are the remains of a Roman temple dedicated to Apollo-Grannus (Grannus was the Celtic god who corresponded to the Roman Apollo). With an area of ​​1000 m², it was the largest Roman temple north of the Alps and finds suggest that it served as a supraregional sanctuary . In 1981 two milestones were found in Gundelfingen and one in Sontheim in 2002 . These finds and the epithet "Phoebus" of Apollon indicate that the name of the Roman settlement was "Phoebiana".

Since 1987 the temple has been partially reconstructed and expanded as a small open-air museum with display boards. Admission is free.

The witch dance

On Gumpigen Thursday (Thursday before Shrove Tuesday ) a carnival game is performed in front of the Schimmelturm. The witch "Schwertgoschin", the leader of the winter witches, fights against the spring fools in the tug of war, which she is subject to. The "Lord of the Seasons" sentences her to death, whereupon she is burned at the stake. The remaining witches (spectators) then dance the whole night through the bars of the city into the morning until they are finally driven away by spring.

The witch's dance is an event well-known beyond the district boundaries and is attended by several thousand fools every year, most of whom dress up as witches with pointed hats, hooked noses and brooms.

The B 16 , which used to go through the city , is now bypassed by the city. Lauingen is located on the Ulm – Donauwörth Danube Valley Railway and has a train station that is served by agilis trains. The Danube Cycle Path and the Via Danubia run through the city.

In 2012 there were 20 employees in agriculture and forestry, 1,444 in manufacturing and 821 in trade, transport and hospitality at the place of work. The largest production site of the Italian agricultural machinery manufacturer SDF-Group (Same Deutz-Fahr) is located in Lauingen. The tractors of the company's own Deutz-Fahr brand are built there in a performance segment from 120 to 440 hp. As of 2017, around 700 employees work there.

In the hamlet of Helmeringen, south of the city of Lauingen, there is - as of November 2010 - the Lauingen Energy Park , the largest solar power plant in Bavarian Swabia with a nominal output of 25.7 MWp . The open space photovoltaic system, which was officially inaugurated on October 10, 2010, was built in three construction phases. The first construction phase went online at the end of 2008, the second followed at the end of 2009 and the third at the end of June 2010.
