List of cast iron fountains in the Taunus and Westerwald
In the territory of Rhenish imbalance resulting engined , primarily in the Taunus and Westerwald , are located in a variety of communities running well from cast iron . This form of water supply has been the usual form of the Taunus since the 19th century. With the establishment of a decentralized water supply from the beginning of the 20th century, they lost their function. Today the restored fountains are gems in many Taunus villages and many of them are under monument protection .
prehistory
The supply of water has always been a prerequisite for the development of human settlements. The majority of the settlements were therefore located near rivers , from which the residents could draw drinking and industrial water. With the formation of villages and towns in the Taunus, the individual farmsteads in Taunus were supplied with water via shallow individual wells , as the distance to the next watercourse increased. Due to the geology of the Taunus , these wells were often not very productive, as the Taunus slate allows rainwater to seep away quickly into deep layers. The running waters were not reliable water dispensers either, as the soils in the Taunus have only a very low storage capacity for rainwater.
From the 18th century at the latest, work began on building a central water supply. This consisted of a central deep well of high capacity and running wells at various points in the village, which were fed by pipes from the well. These fountains each consisted of a wooden trough and an inlet from which it was filled. Unused water was passed on via an overflow to the next, lower lying well.
Cast iron fountain
However, this technique had the disadvantage of a lack of durability and hygiene. The wood used rotted over time, leaked and was not easy to clean. Therefore, in areas where suitable stones were available, such running wells were made of sandstone or similar material. No suitable natural stones were available in the Taunus. Therefore, in almost all Taunus areas, the fountains were replaced by cast iron running fountains in the second half of the 19th century.
The fountains were handcrafted but had a uniform structure. They consisted of two to six (occasionally more) iron plates of the same size, which formed the front and back, and one side plate each of the same size. These plates were individually decorated with different motifs.
origin
Two main manufacturers have emerged where the origin of the wells has been researched: The Michelbacher Hütte and the Buderus foundry in Audenschmiede . A third design has not yet been assigned to a manufacturer. Occasionally wells have been reconstructed in recent times or built according to old models. Apart from a few special cases, the fountains can be assigned to two main types, which presumably correlate with the two manufacturers.
Michelbach type
These fountains often have vertical, horizontal and / or diagonal struts as decoration, in the middle of the plate there are usually even acanthus rosettes . But there are also completely unadorned specimens, some fountains have feet. Michelbacher Hütte is cast as an inscription on some .
Audenschmiede type
Some examples of these fountains are assumed to be of origin in literature or in monument lists Buderus in Audenschmiede. A common feature of all these fountains is the neo-Gothic border decoration of the panels. The decorative ornaments are cruciform acanthus rosettes, lion heads or a bearded male head. These ornaments are often framed by either a dotted arc of a circle or ornate lines. Very often these fountains have an elaborate, octagonal fountain column; single one rectangular with pyramid roof.
Lahn dill type
These fountains from an unknown manufacturer exist in rectangular or octagonal shapes. Most of them occur in the Westerwald or in the Lahn-Dill district . Characteristic are numerous vertical ornamental struts with flower rosettes of the same number on the upper edge. The rectangular troughs have undivided, long side elements that meet with double edges. There are also unadorned specimens of these.
More types
Apart from the two most common types, there are a few "weirdos". The fountains in Birlenbach and Laimbach differ completely from the other types, but the columns of the two are very similar. The market fountain in Ober-Rosbach also has individual trough plates, but its column is very similar to those of the fountains from Audenschmiede. The fountain in Kubach has a similar column, the trough of which corresponds to that of the fountain in Köppern.
More modern types
Some fountain troughs are not composed of several plates like the previous types, but are cast in one piece, which indicates a more recent date of origin. They are also used for ornamental fountains. In addition, there are reconstructed types based on historical models, such as those made in the Hessenpark based on alleged Audenschmieder models.

Running fountain with a particularly large square post made of cast iron with a pyramid finish, applied ornaments and a water outlet in the form of an animal's head. The original cast iron trough was replaced by a rectangular concrete trough. The well, which may have been built in the Michelbacher Hütte at the end of the 19th century, was used to supply water to the Neugasse / Biengasse extension area south of the town wall after 1800. The urban development function as the eastern end of the school-Neugasse line of sight explains the unusual emphasis on the post as an architectural element in its still classicist form. | rectangular, three-field | Column (rectangular) | Audenschmiede |

Eschbach 50 ° 21 ′ 21.6 ″ N , 8 ° 32 ′ 12.2 ″ E |
Since the early 19th century, Eschbach had a water supply via a fountain on the corner of Eichelgasse and Wiesenbornstrasse and three running fountains along the main street. The first of these fountains with a cast-iron trough was in front of house Michelbacher Strasse 2, the second with a cast-iron double trough was in front of Hauptstrasse 16. The third trough was made of red sandstone and is the only one that has been preserved. It is placed in a niche in the south wall of the churchyard. | |
Arnoldshain 50 ° 15 ′ 37.8 ″ N , 8 ° 27 ′ 9 ″ E |
The two-field fountain at Dallas opposite City Hall, erected at the end of the 19th century, was moved to the cemetery in 1955 after a new fountain was erected to mark the 800th anniversary of the town. The old cast iron fountain stood by the cemetery until the 1990s. |
