The municipality belongs to the arrondissement Vienne and the canton L'Isle-d'Abeau (until 2015: canton Saint-Jean-de-Bournay ). The inhabitants are called Meyruyards .

Meyrieu-les-Étangs is 25 kilometers east of Vienne . Meyrieu-les-Étangs is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Artas in the north and northwest, Saint-Aignan-sur-Bion in the northeast, Culin in the east, Sainte-Anne-sur-Gervonde in the southeast, Châtonnay in the south and Saint-Jean-de- Bournay to the west and southwest.
