Artas is a rural, French municipality with 1809 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of La Verpillière .

geography

Artas is located in the Porte des Alpes area (Gate of the Alps), 35 kilometers southeast of Lyon , 15 kilometers southwest of Bourgoin-Jallieu and 9 kilometers southeast of Villefontaine , between the neighboring communities of Meyrieu-les-Étangs in the southeast, Saint-Jean-de- Bournay (also the canton capital) in the southwest and Charantonnay in the north. The Charavoux and Etang streams are the main watercourses in the municipality.

history

In 1793 Artas received in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government .

On June 10, 1906, Mother's Day was celebrated for the first time in Artas . Artas was the first parish in Isère to celebrate Mother's Day. Organized by the Union fraternelle des pères de familles méritants d'Artas ('fraternal union of fathers from deserving families'), the streets were decorated, a procession was held and certificates and gifts were distributed to mothers.

Attractions

An original Saint-Pierre church was first mentioned in a document in 1095. Around 1190, a Saint-Pierre priory was also mentioned, which belonged to the Cluny Abbey . In the 19th century, large parts of the church were renovated and a church tower built in the neo-Romanesque style. The former priory is now used as a mairie and school.

To the northwest of the town center is La Pierre Grand ('the big stone'), a boulder also called Pierre du Diable ('devil's stone'). Its volume is about 100 m³ (it is 4 to 5 m high).

Economy and Infrastructure

There are several quarries in Artas, several shops and a restaurant. Agriculture and viticulture are important industries in Artasia .

There is a gym, a tennis court, a football stadium, two basketball courts and a boulodrome in Artas. The municipality also has an École maternelle and a primary school.

Protected geographical indications (IGP) for Emmentaler ( Emmental français Est-Central ) and white , rosé and red wine ( Isère ) apply in the municipality .
