Penol is a French municipality with 350 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Penol belongs administratively to the Arrondissement Vienne and is part of the canton Bièvre (until 2015: canton La Côte-Saint-André ). The community belongs to the Communauté de communes Bièvre Isère . The inhabitants are called Penolois .

Penol is 40 kilometers south-southeast of Lyon . Penol is surrounded by the neighboring communities
- Bossieu in the north and north-west,
- Ornacieux-Balbins with Ornacieux in the north and northeast and Balbins in the east,
- Sardieu in the east and south-east,
- Marcilloles in the south,
- Pajay in the west and south-west,
- Faramans in the west.
A small exclave of Penol is located southwest of the municipality between the municipalities of Pajay, Thodure and Beaufort .
