Montgomery County is a county in the US state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Dayton .

geography

The county is located in southwest Ohio, about 25 miles to the west from the Indiana border and covers an area of ​​1,203 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Miami County , Clark County , Greene County , Warren County , Butler County , Preble County, and Darke County .

history

Montgomery County was formed on March 24, 1803 from parts of Hamilton County and Wayne County. It was named after Richard Montgomery , a major general in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence .

In the county is a National Historical Park , the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park . Seven locations have National Historic Landmark status . 147 structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 5, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Montgomery County had 559,062 people in 229,229 households and 146,935 families. The population density was 468 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.57 percent white, 19.86 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 1.31 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.49 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.51 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.27 percent of the population.

Of the 229,229 households, 29.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 46.3 percent were married couples living together, 13.8 percent were single mothers, 35.9 percent were non-families, 30.4 percent were single households, and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.96 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 88.6 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 40,156 , and the median income for a family was $ 50,071. Males had a median income of $ 38,710 versus $ 27,297 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,743. 8.3 percent of families and 11.3 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 15.6 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.2 percent were people over 65 years of age.
