The 2012–13 NBA season marked the National Basketball Association's 67th season . The Miami Heat was able to defend its title.

Before the start of the season

New Jersey Nets move to Brooklyn

Back in 2004, when the New Jersey Nets team was sold to Bruce Ratner , he announced a move to Brooklyn in New York City . After the 2011/12 season, 35 years after the founding of the Nets, they finally left East Rutherford in New Jersey and from the new season play as the Brooklyn Nets in the Barclays Center , a multifunctional hall in Brooklyn.

Important club changes

• After eight years in Phoenix, Steve Nash joined the Los Angeles Lakers via a sign-and-trade deal. In exchange, the Phoenix Suns received a total of four draft picks.
• For five players and a draft pick Joe Johnson was transferred from the Atlanta Hawks to the Brooklyn Nets .
• The most successful 3-point shooter in NBA history, Ray Allen , left the Boston Celtics after five years and joined their rival, the reigning champions Miami Heat .
• The Boston Celtics strengthened themselves with the "sixth man" and best 3-point thrower of the Dallas Mavericks , Jason Terry .
• At the Dallas Mavericks, however, there was a union of the two German national players Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Kaman , who came from the New Orleans Hornets . Also strengthen Elton Brand (Philadelphia 76ers) and OJ Mayo (Memphis Grizzlies) the Mavericks.
• Jason Kidd moved from the Mavericks to the New York Knicks .
• Jeremy Lin , last season's discovery, left the New York Knicks to sign with the Houston Rockets .
• The Minnesota Timberwolves signed two Russians from PBK CSKA Moscow , the MVP of the Euroleague and Andrei Kirilenko, who is returning to the NBA, and the NBA rookie Alexei Schwed .
• Brandon Roy also signed a contract with the Timberwolves . The former star player of the Portland Trail Blazers had actually declared his career over due to injuries the year before.
• The largest trade of the summer took place between four clubs with twelve players and five draft picks. So left Andrew Bynum , the Los Angeles Lakers and moved to the Philadelphia 76ers , whose star player Andre Iguodala , however, left the club and joined the Denver Nuggets on. At the Lakers, however, Dwight Howard landed in this megatrade, three times NBA Defensive Player of the Year and previously a player at Orlando Magic .
• Just before the start of the season, there was another spectacular change: in a 9-player trade, the best sixth man of the last season, James Harden , was transferred from Oklahoma City Thunder to the Houston Rockets . In return, Kevin Martin landed at Oklahoma City , among others .

NBA draft

The 2012 NBA Draft was conducted on June 28, 2012 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey . In two draft rounds, the 30 NBA teams were able to secure the rights to 60 young players from the NCAA college league and abroad.

During the season

Important club changes

• On November 29, the five-time champion Derek Fisher signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks, which reacted to the move from Jason Kidd and a bad start to the season caused by a knee injury to Dirk Nowitzki.
• Since the Memphis Grizzlies had to cut their salaries (luxury tax), Rudy Gay , top scorer of the Grizzlies, was transferred to the Toronto Raptors, whose point guard José Calderón, however, now plays for the Detroit Pistons. On the other hand, Tayshaun Prince had to leave Detroit after 11 years and now plays for Memphis. Another three players were involved in the trade.
• On February 26th, Tim Ohlbrecht signed a multi-year contract with the Houston Rockets and became the third German to play in the NBA after Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Kaman. By the end of the season he had three short assignments.

All-Star Game

The All-Star Game took place on February 17, 2013 as part of the All-Star Weekend at the Toyota Center , home of the Houston Rockets . After 1989 and 2006, it was the third time that the All-Star Game took place in Houston. The West selection won the game against the East with 143: 138. Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers became the MVP elected the party.

Milestones

• Stephen Curry scored 272 three-point throws during the regular season. He improved Ray Allen's seven-year-old record by three three-point throws.
