The 1988/89 NHL season was the 72nd season in the National Hockey League . 21 teams played 80 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Calgary Flames after a 4-2 win in the final series against the Montréal Canadiens . It was Calgary's first and so far only championship. In addition, Calgary succeeded as the only team so far to secure the title with the decisive victory in Montreal in the home stadium of the Canadiens.
The best scorer was Mario Lemieux who laid the foundation for his 199 points with 85 goals. In terms of templates, no one exceeded Lemieux's mark of 114, but Wayne Gretzky also achieved it. Lemieux was also the best in the majority with 31 goals and in the minority with 13 goals. With an average of 28 percent, almost every third shot by Rob Brown landed in the goal. Nobody shot more than Steve Yzerman with 388 attempts on goal. The bad guy of the season was Tim Hunter with 375 penalty minutes. The most successful defender was Paul Coffey with 30 goals, 83 assists and 113 points.

The best scorer among the rookies was Brian Leetch , who headed the scorer list with 48 assists and 71 points. Tony Granato was the most successful scorer among the newcomers with 36 goals. The plus / minus member and not of the rookies led Craig Janney with +20. The bad guy among the rookies was Pittsburgh's Jay Caufield with a penalty of 285 minutes.
