Ohio County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The administrative headquarters ( the county seat ) is Rising Sun .

The county is located almost in the extreme southeast of Indiana, borders Kentucky to the east and has an area of 227 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Dearborn County , Boone County, Kentucky, Switzerland County, and Ripley County .
history
Ohio County was formed on January 4, 1844 from parts of Dearborn County. It was named after the Ohio River .

According to the 2000 census , Ohio County had 5,623 people in 2201 households and 1,586 families. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.70 percent white, 0.48 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.05 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.48 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.44 percent of the population.
Of the 2201 households, 31.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 59.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers, and 27.9 percent were non-families. 23.2 percent were single households and 10.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
24.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.8 percent between 18 and 24, 28.6 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 25.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 96.2 men.
The median income for a household in the 41,348 US dollars , the average income of families 48,801 USD. Males had a median income of $ 37,297 versus $ 25,242 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,627. 5.8 percent of families and 7.1 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
