Preliminary round

In Group A, Brazil gave up the only two sets in the top match against Italy and took first place with ease. For Italy this 2: 3 was the only defeat in the preliminary round. The two Asian representatives South Korea and Japan also qualified for the quarter-finals, with the Koreans winning the direct duel. Kenya could not win a single set and, like Greece, were eliminated after the preliminary round.

In Group B, China lost to Cuba in five sets, but was able to secure first place ahead of the Eastern Europeans with a final win against Russia. Cuba finished third in front of the Americans despite a 3-0 draw against the USA. The German team started the tournament successfully against Cuba, but then suffered three defeats in a row and with the win against the Dominican Republic could no longer prevent the premature end.
