The Scottish Football League Division One was played for the 65th time in 1964/65 . It was also the 68th edition of the highest soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. It began on August 19, 1964 and ended on April 28, 1965. In the 1964/65 season, 18 clubs competed against each other in a total of 34 matchdays. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal quotient counted .
The championship won for the first and so far only time in the club's history of FC Kilmarnock . Killie qualified as champion for the following European Cup of National Champions season 1965/66 . The runner-up as well as the third and fourth placed Heart of Midlothian , Dunfermline Athletic and Hibernian Edinburgh qualified for the Exhibition Cities Cup . As a cup winner , Celtic Glasgow qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The Airdrieonians FC and Third Lanark were relegated to Division Two . The top scorer with 30 goals was Jim Forrest of the Glasgow Rangers .
