The Scottish Football League Division One was played for the 71st time in 1970/71 . It was also the 74th edition of the highest soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. It began on August 29, 1970 and ended on May 1, 1971. In the 1970/71 season, 18 clubs competed against each other in a total of 34 matchdays. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal quotient counted .
The championship won for the 26th time in the club's history Celtic Glasgow . The Bhoys qualified as champions for the following European Cup of the 1971/72 season . The runner-up, as well as the third and fifth placed, FC Aberdeen , FC St. Johnstone and FC Dundee qualified for the UEFA Cup . As a defeated cup finalist , the Glasgow Rangers qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . In this European competition, the Rangers won the final 3-2 against FK Dynamo Moscow . The Raith Rovers and Cowdenbeath FC were relegated to Division Two . The top scorer was Harry Hood from Celtic Glasgow with 22 goals .
