The Extraliga , officially Tipsport liga since 2015 after the sponsor tipsport , has been the top division in Slovak professional ice hockey since 1993 .
history
The league was created in 1993 after the end of Czechoslovakia from the division of the highest Czechoslovak league, the first division , into a Czech and a Slovak professional class. From the 1993/94 season to 1997/98 the league was officially named Extraliga , and since 1998 various sponsor names have been included in the title, so the division was called West Extraliga until 2001 , other names were Boss Extraliga , ST Extraliga and T-Com Extraliga . From January 16, 2007 to November 2011, the league was officially called Slovnaft Extraliga , then it was called Tipsport Extraliga . Before the 2015/16 season, the league was renamed Tipsport liga .
The Slovak Extraliga is considered to be the financially weakest among Europe's top 7 leagues . In the Champions Hockey League she was initially classified as number five because of the successes in the European Cup and thus received a permanent starting place. The clubs' budgets and salaries roughly correspond to the Swiss National League B , with the differences between the top teams such as HC Košice and the back teams being large. The best talents leave the country early, especially to the neighboring Czech Republic or North America.

In 2001 the league was increased to ten teams. This number was kept until 2007, only the mode of promotion and relegation was changed several times. A major change was not introduced until the 2007/08 season: the U20 national team took part in the extra league and, with the newly promoted Kežmarok, is part of a league expansion to twelve teams. Since the 2010/11 season, the league has only been played with eleven participants, including the U20 national team.
With the inclusion of HC Slovan Bratislava in the Continental Hockey League in 2012, ŠHK 37 Piešťany was accepted as a successor in the Extraliga.
For the 2018/19 season, the Extraliga will host two Hungarian teams: DVTK Jegesmedvék from Miskolc and MAC Budapest . The two clubs were the finalists of the Hungarian-Romanian MOL League and First League for the past three years. The inclusion of the teams was supported by the Hungarian government with around 1.8 million euros.
