St. Joseph County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is South Bend .

The total area of the district is 1,194 square kilometers. Nine square kilometers of this area consist of water, that is 0.79 percent.
history
Father Jacques Marquette , a Jesuit missionary, was arguably the first European to set foot in the area between 1671 and 1675. St. Joseph County was formed on January 29, 1830 and was the fourth largest county in Indiana. It was named after a French fort of the same name. The first county seat was established on William Brookfield's farm. On September 7, 1831, the administrative headquarters were moved to South Bend.
In St. Joseph County is a National Historic Landmark , the Clement Studebaker House . A total of 92 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 4, 2017).

At the 2000 census there were 265,559 residents, 100,743 households and 66,792 families in the district. The population density was 224 inhabitants per square kilometer.
The ethnic composition was as follows: 82.36 percent White, 11.46 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 1.34 percent Asian, 0.05 percent Oceanian, 2.48 percent other races, and 1.97 percent with two or more ethnicities. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.73 percent of the total population.
Of the 100,743 households, 32.0 percent had children under the age of 18, 50.0 percent were married couples, 12.4 percent were households with only one female head of the household , and 33.7 percent were single households.
25.7 percent of the population were younger than 18 years old, 11.8 percent were 18–24 years old, 28.0 percent were 25–44 years old, 20.9 percent were 45–64, and 13.6 percent were 65 Years and older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males; for every 100 female residents over the age of 18 there were 89.8 male residents.
