The Toyota WISH is a compact van that the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota produced in two generations between 2003 and 2017. It was available with six or seven seats and is equipped with a 1.8 liter R4 engine or a 2.0 liter R4 engine. In the Toyota model range, the WISH stands between the smaller Spacio and the larger Ipsum .

In addition to Japan, the WISH was also manufactured in Thailand (for the markets in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore ) and Taiwan (only for the market in Taiwan).

2003

The WISH was developed under the code name "760N" by a team led by chief engineer Takeshi Yoshida and was first introduced to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2002. On January 20, 2003, the car was introduced in Japan with a massive advertising campaign featuring Japanese pop singer Hikaru Utada . The song Colors appeared in the TV commercial , and its launch coincided with the release of Utada's new CD single. The car was marketed with the slogan “Wish Comes True”.

The front-wheel drive version (code no. ZNE10G) and the all-wheel drive version (code no. ZNE14G) both had the 1.8 l in-line four-cylinder engine with 132 bhp (97 kW) output and a torque of 170 Nm. It was only available with a 4-speed automatic. A 2.0 l version of this engine (code no. ANE11W for the six-seater and code no. ANE10G for the seven-seater) was added in April 2003. This engine, type Toyota 1AZ-FSE, delivers an output of 155 bhp (114 kW) and a torque of 192 Nm. The models with this 2.0 l direct injection engine (2.0D-4) are only available with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The WISH was extremely successful in its home market and often achieved one of the top five places in the registration statistics. It also rocked the sales of its competitors such as the Honda Stream , Mazda Premacy, and Mazda5 . In December 2003, the WISH also appeared as a locally assembled model in Thailand. The Thai model differs only slightly from the Japanese model:

  • All models have the fenders of the 2.0Z
  • All models have 17 "rims (like the 2.0Z)
  • The same 1AZ-FE engine is installed as in the Camry for the ASEAN countries, instead of the 1AZ-FSE engine.
  • No tinted windows (with the exception of gray import vehicles)
  • Standard leather interior in the 2.0Q
  • The front-wheel drive model has the rear suspension of the Japanese four-wheel drive model on double wishbones as standard, instead of the suspension on torsion bars.

2004

In November 2004 the WISH came out in Taiwan. In this market the car is sold with the advertising slogan "No Rules!" (no rules!) marketed in a TV commercial set in New York . The same engine is installed in the Taiwanese model as in the Thai one. The Taiwan version also differs in some external details: There was a new front, new LED taillights, reflectors embedded in the rear bumper, side protection strips in the color of the car or chrome-plated and a chrome-plated license plate holder at the rear. Unlike the Japanese model, the Taiwanese version is delivered without the WISH label. Parking sensors, a double sliding glass roof and leather seats are available as special equipment. The Taiwanese WISH is also available with a beige interior, which is not available in Japan and Thailand.

2005

Toyota WISH 2.0G (Japan, 2005)

The car was a great success in Japan and regularly topped the bestseller lists, which is not a given for a compact van. At the end of 2005 the WISH was revised. The original model was well constructed so only a few minor changes were necessary. There were new headlights, new bumpers, LED taillights and a new dashboard with new controls for the air conditioning and automatic transmission. The 2.0Z got a seven-speed automatic. Since the changes were minor, the fuel consumption, the lowest in its class, also stayed the same. The WISH model 2005 was also the third model that was sold exclusively in the new Toyota NETZ dealer network. The front emblem W typical of the WISH was replaced by the NETZ oval (as with the Vitz and Ist from 2005). The WISH's new electronic accelerator was received with mixed feelings by customers; the original mechanical accelerator pedal on the 2003 model was said to be more responsive. Drive and motors remain the same.

From 2007, the Toyota navigation system G-BOOK and telematics were introduced as special equipment for the Japanese models .
