Uherské Hradiště ( German Hungarian Hradisch , Hungarian Magyarhradis ) is a town in the Zlínský kraj in the Czech Republic with about 25,000 inhabitants.

The city is located in the south-east of the Czech Republic in Moravian Slovakia . Its center is located on a plain on an island on the left bank of the March ( Morava ). The Olšava and its old river bed Stará Olšava run south .

The town was founded in 1257 on an island in the March as Nový Veligrad by Ottokar II Přemysl . She received the market rights from Veligrad-Staré Město and Kunovice transferred.

At the beginning of the 14th century, the royal city was given the name Hradiště , which was expanded to include Uherské ( Hungarian ) in the 17th century . The city was besieged from 1469 to 1473 by Matthias Corvinus of Hungary in vain.

Until 1749 the privileged hunters of Stříbrnice exercised the office of executioner . In 1780 the fortress was abandoned.

In Old Austria, Hungarian Hradisch was the seat of the district administration for the district of the same name. Around 1900 there were 5,137 predominantly Czech residents, including 937 Germans and Jews.

The station Staré Město u Uherského Hradiště is located on the Vienna – Krakow line of the former state railways (today the Břeclav – Petrovice u Karviné line ), from there the Kunovice – Staré Město u Uherského Hradiště line branches off via the Uherské Hradiště station to Kunisch-owitz of the former Austria. Hungarian State Railways and connects to the Brno – Vlárský průsmyk line at Kunovice station .
