The Chicago Portal Chicago is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Illinois and in the Midwestern United States. With a population of 2,746,388 in the 2020 census, it is the third-most populous city in the United States after New York City and Los Angeles. As the seat of Cook County, the second-most populous county in the U.S., Chicago is the center of the Chicago metropolitan area, often colloquially called "Chicagoland" and home to 9.6 million residents. Chicago is an international hub for finance, culture, commerce, industry, education, technology, telecommunications, and transportation. It has the largest and most diverse derivatives market in the world, generating 20% of all volume in commodities and financial futures alone. O'Hare International Airport is routinely ranked among the world's top six busiest airports by passenger traffic, and the region is also the nation's railroad hub. The Chicago area has one of the highest gross domestic products (GDP) of any urban region in the world, generating $689 billion in 2018. Selected article BP Pedestrian Bridge or simply BP Bridge is a pedestrian bridge crossing Columbus Drive in the Loop community area of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States that connects Millennium Park to Daley Bicentennial Plaza in Grant Park. Designed by Frank Gehry, it had a May 22, 2004, ribbon-cutting ceremony before officially opening along with the rest of Millennium Park on July 16, 2004. The girder bridge is the first bridge designed by Pritzker Prize-winner, Gehry, and was named for British Petroleum, which donated $5 million to the construction of the Park. The bridge is referred to as snakelike or serpentine in character due to its curving form. The bridge's design enables it to bear a heavy load without structural problems caused by its own weight, has won awards for its use of sheet metal and is known for its aesthetics. Additionally, it serves acoustic needs as a sound barrier and functional needs as a connecting link between Millennium Park and points east. The Smoking Popes have released four studio albums, a compilation album, two live albums, four extended plays (EPs), and seven singles. The group was founded in 1991 by Mike Felumlee (drums) and brothers Matt (bass guitar), Eli (guitar), and Josh Caterer (guitar, vocals). After releasing three independent EPs, the Popes signed with local punk rock record label Johann's Face Records. Johann's Face issued a fourth EP and the Popes' first two studio albums—Get Fired and Born to Quit. EMI subsidiary Capitol Records signed the band and re-released Born to Quit in 1995, yielding a minor hit on punk rock radio stations with "Need You Around". The Smoking Popes released their third album through Capitol in 1997 and broke up the following year. To fulfill their contract with Capitol Records, the band recorded an album of cover songs, which was rejected for release by the label. The Popes were dormant until they reunited in late 2005. The band played a reunion show on November 11, 2005, recording and releasing the concert through Felumlee's Double Zero Records. Selected biography Antonin Gregory Scalia (1936–2016) was an American jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Appointed to the Court by President Ronald Reagan in 1986, he came to be described as the intellectual anchor of the Court's conservative wing. Scalia was born in Trenton, New Jersey, was raised in New York City, attended Georgetown University as an undergraduate, and obtained his law degree from Harvard Law School. After spending six years in a Cleveland law firm, he became a law school professor. In the early 1970s, he served in the Nixon and Ford administrations. He spent most of the Carter years teaching at the University of Chicago, where he became one of the first faculty advisers of the fledgling Federalist Society. In 1982, he was appointed as a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit by President Reagan. In 1986, Judge Scalia was appointed by Reagan to the Supreme Court to fill the seat as associate justice vacated when Justice William Rehnquist was elevated to Chief Justice. Scalia was unanimously confirmed by the Senate, and took the bench on September 26, 1986. In his nearly three decades on the Court, Justice Scalia staked-out a conservative ideology in his opinions, advocating textualism in statutory interpretation and originalism in constitutional interpretation. He was a strong defender of the powers of the Executive Branch, believing presidential power should be paramount in many areas. He opposed affirmative action and other policies that treat minorities as groups. He filed separate opinions in a large number of cases, and, in his minority opinions, often castigated the Court's majority in scathing language. Selected landmark The DeKalb County Courthouse is located in the county seat of DeKalb County, Illinois, U.S.A., the city of Sycamore. The Classical Revival structure sits on a square facing Illinois Route 64 as it passes through the city. The current courthouse was constructed in 1905 amid controversy over where the courthouse and thus, ultimately, the county seat would be located. The current building is the third structure to bear the name "DeKalb County Courthouse." DeKalb County's Courthouse still serves as the county's primary judicial center and is a contributing property to the Sycamore Historic District. The district joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. As the county's primary courthouse for over 100 years, the site has been host to many trials, including prominent murder cases. The building is cast in the Classical Revival architectural style and contains elements common to that style. Stained glass, columns and a pediment are among the more noticeable features at a glance. The rear facade of the building is designed to resemble a temple and also features stained glass windows. A stone porte-cochere covers the rear driveway. Inside the building's third floor courtroom is more stained glass, in the form of a skylight. During the early 1980s a made for television movie had scenes filmed in the DeKalb County Courthouse's courtroom.
