WTA Acapulco .
The international tennis tournament Abierto Mexicano Telcel is an annual ATP tournament in Acapulco , Mexico . The tournament was held for the first time in 1993, back then in Mexico City . Only in the 2001 season did the change of location to Acapulco take place, the tournament will be held at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess . It is part of the ATP Tour 500 , the second highest tournament category of the ATP Tour after the Masters Series , and part of the so-called Golden Swing , a series of clay court tournaments in Latin America at the beginning of the season (in addition to Acapulco, the tournaments in Viña del Mar (until 2014), Buenos Aires and São Paulo ). The tournament was held on clay courts up to and including 2013, and has been played on hard courts since the 2014 season.
Thomas Muster and Dominic Thiem are the only German-speaking players to date to have won the tournament. With four wins, Muster is also a record holder - together with David Ferrer . The Austrian Oliver Marach was also able to triumph twice in the doubles competition .
The tournament now takes place in February and March and lasts for a week.
