Altenberg ( pronunciation ? / I ) is a northern part of the municipality of Odenthal in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis and was the first ancestral seat of the Counts of Berg. history

Roman time

Theodor Mommsen mentions Altenberg as a place of discovery in his “ Roman History ”: “The altar stone found by a private person in Altenberg ( Mülheim district ) on the Dhünn river is almost the only evidence of Roman residents in these areas. This is all the more remarkable as the flourishing of Cologne, had it not been for special obstacles, would have carried Roman civilization to the other bank by itself. "

Medieval view of Altenberg

The ruins of Berge Castle near Altenberg are the ancestral seat of the Count von Berg named after them. 1133 the counts leaving the place where her old family seat was, from some Burgundy originating Cistercian -Mönchen to a new castle above the Wupper relocate. This castle, which is known today as Schloss Burg , was called Burg Neuenberge to distinguish it from the old ancestral seat , the old castle was called Burg Altenberge . The monks built the Altenberg Abbey on the site of the old castle , but after a short time they moved a few hundred meters further into the valley to the Dhünn . The name of the abbey and the old castle were eventually transferred to the settlement.

Carl Friedrich von Wiebeking names the court on his charter of the Duchy of Berg in 1789 as Altenberg . It shows that Altenberg was part of Oberkirspel (upper parish ) in the lordship of Odenthal at that time .

Modern times

Under the French administration between 1806 and 1813, the rule was dissolved and Altenberg was politically assigned to the Mairie Odenthal in the canton of Bensberg . In 1816 the Prussians converted the Mairie to the mayor's office in Odenthal in the Mülheim am Rhein district .

The place is recorded on the topographical survey of the Rhineland from 1824 and on the Prussian first survey of 1840 as Altenberg . From the Prussian new admission in 1892, it is regularly listed as Altenberg on measuring table sheets . Altenberg Odenthal belonged to the Catholic parish until 1915 as a separate St. Catholic Parish of the Assumption abgepfarrt was with the Cathedral of Our Lady to Altenberg as a parish church. In 1950 Altenberg became an independent Protestant parish.

Altenberg Cathedral

In Altenberg there is still the high Gothic Altenberg Cathedral , begun in 1259 , the monastery church of the former Altenberg Abbey , which is called the cathedral due to its size and external appearance , but was never the seat of a bishop. The Altenberg Cathedral has been a simultaneous church since 1856 and is used for church services by both the Protestant and Catholic communities. Concerts are also held there regularly.

The cathedral is owned by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , which also financed the extensive renovation work completed in 2006. On August 25, 2006, an ecumenical service and state ceremony took place at the end of the twelve-year restoration in the presence of Cardinal Joachim Meisner , Nikolaus Schneider , President of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland , and Prime Minister Jürgen Rüttgers .

The Altenberg Cathedral is also a popular place for weddings today. At the 2005 World Youth Day in Cologne it served as a catechesis place for the pilgrims. Every year on May 1st, Altenberg is the starting point for Altenberger Licht , an international light relay of peace. At the end of the motorcycle season, there is a large ecumenical service for motorcyclists every year. The journey to this takes place in a motorcycle parade with several thousand participants from Cologne to Altenberg.

Other facilities

Since 1926 the youth education center Haus Altenberg has existed on the site of the former abbey next to the cathedral , originally the headquarters of the Catholic youth in Germany and today an institution of the Archdiocese of Cologne .

In Altenberg there is also the so-called fairy tale forest , in which many German fairy tales are depicted in huts and characters. There is a water organ in an adjacent restaurant . The fairy tale forest is a traditional destination for class and family trips from the Cologne area and the Bergisches Land. Altenberg is also a popular starting point for hikes.

With SV Altenberg, Altenberg is the only football club in the Odenthal community.
