This article is about FC Winterthur in the 2011/12 season . FC Winterthur reached 4th place this season after a bad first third of the championship in the Challenge League and was ultimately able to maintain the class despite the league downsizing. In the Swiss Cup, the Winterthur team were eliminated in the semifinals against eventual cup winners FC Basel .

Season course

preparation

At the start of training on June 14th, the departures of Matteus Senkal , Nico Thüring and the veteran Rainer Bieli were known, none of whom received any new contracts. The first was to replace Bieli Altin Osmani , who was able to score six goals for himself last season on loan from FC Basel at FC Wohlen - FCW will now take over after his contract in Basel has expired. Dominik Ritter , who previously played with FCW on a loan deal, was also taken over with a two-year contract from FC Basel . Other departures that became known during the preparations were those of Simijonovics , who, like other players before him, moved to GC and of Lekaj , who moved to Wil. However, two planned departures abroad failed: that of Ermir Lenjani to the second-class Turkish club Elazigspor , who could not pay the transfer fee, and that of Luca Radice to the Scottish Premier League club FC St. Mirren , whose transfer also did not take place, so Radice came back from Scotland from September also back in the squad of Winterthur. As a return to the Schützenwiese, Isuf Llumnica was signed , other new signings before the start of the season were those of the defensive player Sawwas Exouzidis , whose last club Diagoras Rhodos no longer paid the wages, as well as offensive player Biscotte , whose physical condition was still in question after an injury break.

The test match record of the FCW at the beginning of the season was not too meaningful, the FCW lost games against the Super League club FC Luzern (0: 2) and against the two first division clubs FC Schaffhausen (1: 3) and YF Juventus Zurich (1: 2 ) and won the blitz tournament in Uster as well as games against the second team of VfB Stuttgart and against a Brazilian national team.

First round

The season goal for the new season was automatically given for FC Winterthur due to the special starting position of the 2011/12 season: The 13th place of the last season would not be for the FCW in the new season due to the league reduction to only ten teams Relegation is enough. However, coach Boro Kuzmanovic himself did not feel under pressure during the preparations for a fundamental renewal of the team, as the team was playing “below their potential level” compared to last season according to Kuzmanovic and he was convinced of those who are there. As a result, the FCW started the new season with a not fundamentally changed team.

The FCW started the new season rather cautiously. In the first three games against the three nominally stronger opponents from Aarau, Vaduz and St. Gallen, the people of Winterthur were only able to secure one point and thus ranked on a relegation zone. After that, the Winterthur team was able to catch six points in three games against the weaker teams from Carouge, Kriens and Wohlen, but according to coach Boro Kuzmanovic he still got three points "too few". During the national team break that followed, FCW played a friendly game against the Hamburg cult club FC St. Pauli (0: 3) for the first time , which attracted 6,500 spectators to the Schützenwiese. After another three defeats in a row and a draw, the team of coach Kuzmanovic was in 15th place, but in the tightly packed lower half of the table of the Challenge League only three points behind the then tenth-placed FC Vaduz and six points behind the sixth-placed FC Wohlen . In view of the relegation-threatening situation in Winterthur, the coach question was again actively discussed, before the third consecutive defeat against Bellinzona Der Landbote speculated whether this would be the last trip with Kuzmanovic. In particular, the bad home record also depressed the number of spectators, so the 0-0 win against Chiasso, which caused FCW to slip to 15th and second from last place, only 1,400 spectators on the Schützenwiese. However, Kuzmanovic was able to stay in office despite severe criticism , and one of the reasons why President Hannes W. Keller held on to Kuzmanovic was that the players stood behind their coach opposite him.

The U-turn from the negative series finally managed Winterthur with a 5-0 victory in the Paul-Grüninger-Stadion against the so far without a win, SC Brühl . He was then able to confirm this victory against Nyon away from home. Winterthur then failed to clinch its first home win of the season in the championship with a 0-0 win against FC Locarno , but a few days later he was able to shine in the Cup round of 16 against the BSC Young Boys by hitting the Super League club in a penalty shoot-out threw out of the cup. The cup hero was Christian Leite , who saved three penalties in the Winterthur goal. After another draw at home against Delémont and an away win in Biel, FCW, who last caught up, finished the first half of the season in 10th place. At the end of the first half of the season, the Landbote said that he hadn't achieved what he set out to do in the third half of the year in a row. Particularly noticeable was the poor home record of FCW, which only scored three of its 19 points on the Schützenwiese, but was second in the away ranking list with only one point less than FC St. Gallen . In this regard, Kuzmanovic said that this “unbelievable home record” was a mystery to him. In the individual criticism of the Landbote, goalkeeper Christian Leite came off well with a school grade of 5.5, who according to Landbote was "from problem child to safe value" and newcomer Exouzidis also received a good grade with 5. At the other end of the scale, probably as an expression of the poor first half of the season, four players with Dominik Ritter, Isuf Llumnica, Luca Radice and Altin Osmani were found with a clearly insufficient grade (3), and striker Goran Antic also scored with just one goal in the first half of the season only a grade of 3–4.

Second half

At the start of training, Kris Kuzmanovic also trained in the first team again after he was banned from the first team by his father in the first half of the season. In addition, it could be announced that Alain Sutter has resigned his mandate as sports advisor to the president. At the beginning, the FCW won for the second time after 2006 the seventh event of the Hallenmasters in the ice rink Deutweg with a 4-2 final victory against GC. It was also reported that Luis Frangão ended his career in top football after five and a half years at FCW and many repeated injury breaks. Instead, midfielder Remo Freuler returned to Schützenwiese after a year and a half from the Grasshoppers, where he no longer played a role in coach Ciriaco Sforza's plans . Patrick Bengondo, who returned to Schützenwiese for the third time in November, also signed a new contract in Winterthur. The test match record of the FCW beyond the indoor champions was not bad either, against nominally better opponents such as FC Zurich and FC St. Gallen , he was able to score two draws and in test matches against SC Freiburg and 1860 Munich only narrow 1: 2 defeats resulted. Victories looked out against the regional division SC Pfullendorf (4: 0) and the first division club FC Schaffhausen (4: 2).

The choreography of the Winterthur beer curve in the cup semi-final referred to the break in the quarter-finals

The starting position at the beginning of the second half of the season has changed insofar as Neuchâtel Xamax's forced promotion means that the eleventh placed can also keep the league. The Landbote gave FC Winterthur a good preparation, in which he was able to confirm the defensive stability of the last games of the second half of the season. As a result, FCW also offered a much better second half of the season, which could no longer be compared with the preliminary round: The first five games resulted in four wins and one draw - including a 1-0 home win against second-placed AC Bellinzona. In the cup quarter-finals that followed, the Lions were able to throw the leader of the Challenge League, FC St. Gallen, like the BSC Young Boys, out of the cup on penalties and were rewarded with the semi-finals. The fans will certainly remember the goal celebration after Bengondo's 2-2 equalization in the 82nd minute, when a gang broke in the beer curve and the fans rushed onto the field. On March 24, FCW suffered the only defeat in the second half of the season against FC Aarau due to a penalty in stoppage time. While things went well in the championship and Winterthur was no longer in danger of relegation in fifth place, there was a showdown at home against FC Basel in the Swiss Cup on April 15th . The Winterthur team missed the final with a 1: 2, but had to complain in the first half after a red-worthy goalkeeper foul that referee Alain Bieri missed a penalty whistle - Kris Kuzmanovic was able to pass the ball to the goalkeeper in front of Yann Sommer and was then taken by the goalkeeper brought down. Even the Basel goalie Yann Sommer admitted this frankly after the game: “I was standing in the reeds. If the referee had whistled and kicked me off the field, there would have been little objection. " Why Bieri didn't whistle should probably remain his secret , according to the SRF sports program Sportpanorama - and Winterthur missed the finals.

Winterthur ended the season with 53 points in 4th place in the table - six points behind Aarau and Bellinzona, although FC Aarau was able to contest the Barrage thanks to the better goal difference. For the Landbote, the Winterthur-based company was able to draw the best record in years, after a miserable start from the beginning of October he was the best team in the Challenge League and coach Kuzmanovic attested his team to Super League level in the second half of the season. In the obligatory individual review of the Landbote, goalkeeper Christian Leite was awarded the top grade 6 and Sawwas Exouzidis and Patrick Bengondo also got a very good grade with a 5.5. Altin Osmani only had to be satisfied with an unsatisfactory grade of 3.5.
