← Bundesliga 1963/64
The 1964/65 season was the second season of the German men's Bundesliga . The German champions were SV Werder Bremen , top scorer Rudi Brunnenmeier from TSV 1860 Munich with 24 goals.
Season overview
Werder Bremen, who started as an outsider, managed to keep defending champions 1. FC Köln at a distance. Since the Bundesliga was increased from 16 to 18 teams for the next season, the two actually relegated teams of Karlsruher SC and FC Schalke 04 remained in the league. On the other hand, Hertha BSC had to be forced to relegate because of paying excessive salaries and hand money. Up to now a maximum of DM 1500 was permitted as a contract player's salary. To date, this is the only forced relegation of a Bundesliga club who has not also been relegated in terms of sport at the same time. The lack of a regulation on how to proceed with the relegated clubs in the event of forced relegation of a team outside the relegation ranks led to the decision to increase the league to 18 teams and to save the last two teams relegation. Tasmania Berlin was selected as a replacement for Hertha BSC for the coming season , as a Berlin club should be represented.
In this Bundesliga season, the first penalties were pronounced against clubs for the improper behavior of their fans. Hertha BSC had to pay a 500 DM fine because the striker Uwe Klimaschefski had his shirt torn off after a shot on goal by his own fans who stormed the lawn. In addition, Borussia Neunkirchen had to pay 3,000 DM because a fan from Neunkirchen ran onto the pitch after a foul by Horst-Dieter Höttges from Bremen on a player from Neunkirchen and pushed Höttges onto the lawn.
