On July 30, 2014, the German Athletics Association nominated a total of 47 participants and 46 participants for the 2014 European Athletics Championships in Zurich , Switzerland , which took place from August 12 to 17.
The non-nomination in the 93-strong squad of long jumper Markus Rehm , who started with a prosthetic leg and had become German champion four days earlier, attracted a lot of media attention . Before the start of the competition, the pole vaulter Malte Mohr canceled his start due to technical problems. Nadine Gonska , Inna Weit , Christian Blum and Patrick Domogola , named as substitute runners for the relays, were not used.
With eight podium places, the German team achieved the weakest medal balance since reunification. With David Storl and Robert Harting , two German athletes successfully defended their titles.
