Ute is a female given name of Old High German origin. The original form is (older) Oda or (younger) Uota . The name is derived from ot "possession, inheritance".

The name Ute was hardly used in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. Then in the thirties it became more and more popular. In the fifties and early sixties the name was a few times among the ten most common female first names of the respective year. Its popularity declined sharply in the early 1970s.
