history

The first written mention of Czachrau was on October 7, 1338 in a list of the villages of the dean's office Klattau as the property of Otto von Roupov. From 1362 Wilhelm Ritter von Czachrau is proven to be the owner of the property, he built a mighty fortress with a keep between 1380 and 1390. This was located at a strategically favorable point on a saddle above the valleys of the Ostružná and Strážovský potok in the source area of the latter and was protected by a moat. The lords of Czachrau held the estate until 1446. After that, Diepolt von Riesenberg acquired Czachrau on Velhartice and added the estate to his rule. The Czachrau fortress lost its importance as a manor house and was left to decay. Adam Lev von Rosental had to cede the rule of Velhartice to his creditors after 1541 due to excessive indebtedness. Czachrau was separated from Velhartice again and passed as an independent estate to Johann Rendl von Uschau. In 1555 the fortress was referred to as the old castle and in 1568 as desolate . Rendl's daughter sold the estate to Jan Bohuchval von Hrádek in 1566, who later had the fortress restored. After 1740, a baroque castle was built around the old fortress, which then served as a warehouse. The owners of the estate included the Schofmann von Hemrles, Franz Nikolaus Graf Morzin, Adam Humprecht Kotz von Dobrz , the Count Khuen von Belasy , the Knights Fruwein von Podoli and Jan Hora von Ocelovice.

After the abolition of patrimonial formed Čachrov / Czachrau 1850 with the hamlet Zahrádka a municipality in the judicial district Klatovy. From 1868 the community belonged to the Klattau district . In 1902 one of the first hydropower plants in Bohemia was put into operation on the Ostružná. In 1904 Čachrov was raised to a market town . In 1933 the castle burned down, as a result of the outbreak of the Second World War, the reconstruction work on the castle came to a standstill. The chateau brewery, in which the Světlozdroj beer brand was brewed, ceased operations in 1943. 1961 Březí and Jesení (with Bradné, Chřepice and Onen Svět) were incorporated. On January 1, 1976 Kunkovice (with Chvalšovice, Dobřemilice and Předvojovice) and on April 30, 1976 Javorná (with Svinná) were added. In 1973 the castle ruins were demolished at the instigation of the local national committee. After the Dobrá Voda military training area was closed in 1991, the cadastre Javorná u Polomu and Zhůří were assigned to the municipality of Čachrov. On October 10, 2006 the status as Městys was renewed.
