Production site
The Audi A3 8V is manufactured at two locations: the three- and five-door in Ingolstadt , the sedan and the convertible at Audi Hungária in Győr .
Technology and equipment
All engines are equipped with turbochargers . The Audi A3 and the Golf VII are the first two models from the Volkswagen Group based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB); numerous other models are now also based on the MQB.
The panoramic glass sunroof is a novelty in the three-door model. The rear lights with more than the tail lights in LED technology in conjunction with xenon or LED headlights , the electronic parking brake and the convenience key are generally new on the A3 .
infotainment
With the A3 8V, Audi introduced a number of innovations in the compact class, for example the Audi MMI navigation / vehicle control system with a touchpad integrated into the rotary / push button . Also new is the so-called Audi phone box - a compartment in the center armrest, in which the mobile phone can be placed, whereupon a wireless connection to the vehicle roof antenna is established for better reception. At the same time, the radiation from the telephone antenna in the interior should be greatly reduced. The connection to an external antenna was previously only possible via a corresponding mobile phone holder. For the first time in the A3, an electrically retractable radio / navigation system screen is also available. The Audi drive select settings can also be viewed on this - that is, the individual vehicle settings in the direction of Dynamic (sporty), Efficiency (fuel-saving), Comfort (comfortable) or Individual (individually separate settings for steering resistance, engine response and adaptive cruise control if installed ).
Driver assistance systems
Additional driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control , a lane change assistant , an active lane keeping assistant or dynamic cornering lights with sliding headlight range control are also available at an additional cost .
Equipment variants
Attraction
- The basic model has 16 ″ steel wheels (convertible, notchback sedan: 16 ″ cast aluminum wheels), four-spoke steering wheel, normal seats with fabric covers and height adjustment for the front seats. In addition, an electromechanical parking brake and power steering.
ambition
- With Ambition, 225 mm wide tires are mounted on 17 ″ aluminum wheels, the body is lowered by 15 mm. This equipment also includes a sporty interior such as a leather sport steering wheel in 3-spoke design and sport seats at the front as well as door sills with aluminum inlays.
Ambience
- The Ambiente variant has 16 ″ aluminum wheels and is equipped with a leather steering wheel in a four-spoke design, front center armrest with storage compartment, various additional shelves, light / rain sensor, driver information system (FIS) and cruise control.
S line
- The S line sports package includes special 18 "aluminum wheels, a leather sports steering wheel in a three-spoke design including gear or selector lever knob in leather, leather sports seats with S-line embossing and a black headliner, plus a 25 mm instead of 15 mm lowered body and the “S line” lettering on the door sill trims.
Since the facelift in June 2016 there have been new equipment lines (see Audi A4 ). The previous variants Attraction, Ambition and Ambiente have been replaced by the A3 (basic), A3 sport and A3 design lines.
A3
- The basic equipment includes 16 ″ steel wheels.
A3 sport
- The sporty equipment line includes u. a. a multifunction leather steering wheel, 17 ″ aluminum wheels, sports seats and drive select.

Engines
Initially, a 1.4-l petrol engine with direct petrol injection ( TFSI ) with a maximum output of 90 kW (122 hp) and the more powerful 1.8-l petrol engine with dual clutch transmission ( S tronic ) and a maximum output of 132 kW (180 PS). The lowest output level of the 2.0-liter diesel engine with turbocharging and common rail injection ( TDI ) now has a maximum output of 110 kW (150 hp). The 1.6 TDI with a maximum output of 77 kW (105 PS), a combined fuel consumption of 3.9 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers and 99 g / km CO 2 emissions has been available since August 2012 .
Since February 2013, a gasoline engine with cylinder deactivation (1.4 TFSI COD), 103 kW (140 PS) maximum power and a maximum torque of 250 Nm at 1500 to 3500 rpm has been available.
Since February 2014, the 1.4 TFSI petrol engine has also been available with natural gas drive ( g-tron ) and a maximum output of 81 kW (110 hp) for the five-door variant (Sportback) .
Since November 2014, the five-door Sportback station wagon has also been available as a plug-in hybrid ( e-tron ) with a 1.4-liter petrol engine (110 kW) and an electric motor (75 kW). According to the factory, this has a range of up to 50 km purely electrically, the total range with a combustion engine is up to 940 km.
After the 1.4 l petrol engine with natural gas drive (1.4 TFSI g-tron) was discontinued, there has been a similar one with 1.5 liter displacement and maximum output of 96 kW (131 PS) (1.5 TFSI g-tron) since March 2019 .
Facelift
In April 2016, Audi has a facelift announced the A3 and S3 models for the summer 2016th In addition to visual changes to the body, headlights and rear lights, additional assistance systems, the Audi smartphone interface and the Audi virtual cockpit have been available since then . The A3 also features a heated steering wheel and a driver's seat with a massage function for the first time. Xenon headlights are standard equipment; they replace the halogen headlights. Alternatively, you can order full LED headlights or Matrix LED headlights. Audi also offers revised engines. In addition, the lighting of the controls has been changed from red to white. The names of the equipment variants have been replaced by new names (see Audi A4 ).
Audi A3 sedan
The A3 sedan is the notchback version of the vehicle. In the USA it is called a sedan , in the UK it is a saloon . The automobile is 24 centimeters shorter than the Audi A4; As with the other body variants, the engine is installed transversely and not lengthways as in the A4. The Audi A3 Sedan is available with all gasoline engines from 1.0 TFSI to 2.5 TFSI (RS3), with the exception of the 1.2 TFSI.
Audi A3 e-tron
The Audi A3 Sportback e-tron, introduced in November 2014, is a compact car with a standard plug-in hybrid drive . It has a combined drive from a combustion engine and an electric motor. The 1.4 l petrol engine with direct petrol injection (TFSI) has a maximum output of 110 kW (150 PS) and works via a clutch with the electric motor, which has an output of 75 kW (102 PS). The disc-shaped electric motor is integrated into a newly designed six-speed S-tronic. Both drives complement each other, the system output of the A3 is 150 kW (204 hp). The electric motor has the maximum torque (330 Nm) from the start up to approx. 2000 rpm, the gasoline engine reaches its maximum torque of 250 Nm in the range from 1750 to 4000 rpm. The system torque is 350 Newton meters.
The lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 8.8 kWh sits protected under the rear seat bench and load compartment floor; the trunk of the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron is therefore only 280 liters. The battery can be fully charged in about 3:45 hours at normal household sockets. A range of up to 50 kilometers is possible in purely electric mode. The combined standard fuel consumption is 1.5–1.7 l / 100 km (electricity 114.0–124.0 Wh / km), the maximum range is up to 940 kilometers.
In the 2019 model year, the A3 e-tron was no longer available due to the WLTP conversion. In November 2018, Audi announced the official end of production.
The Audi A3 e-tron has been available on the European market again since October 2019.
A3 Clubsport quattro concept
For the GTI meeting in 2014, Audi built a concept vehicle based on the S3 sedan. The A3 clubsport quattro concept has a 2.5-liter turbo in-line five-cylinder with a maximum output of 386 kW.
