The VW Golf VII is the seventh series of the VW Golf . It was launched in Germany in autumn 2012.

The Golf VII was voted European Car of the Year 2013 and World Car of the Year (WCOTY) and received the Golden Steering Wheel in the small and compact car category . It also won the 2015 North American Car of the Year election .

General

The Golf VII and the Audi A3 8V are the first two models from the Volkswagen group to be based on the MQB platform . MQB stands for modular transverse matrix ; the platform has been used in new models with transversely installed engines since 2012. Volkswagen developed the modular system in order to have more variability than with the platform concept . The internal combustion engines produce up to 228 kW (310 hp) in the Golf R. All three or four-cylinder engines are new developments. The current 1.6 or 2.0 liter diesel engines meet the Euro 6 emissions standard . There is also a gas-powered 1.4-liter turbo engine with 81 kW (110 PS), a plug-in hybrid with a 1.4-liter gasoline engine (Golf GTE) and an electric car (e-Golf).

Volkswagen officially presented the Golf VII on September 4, 2012.

The Golf VII is 4.26 meters long and thus 5.6 centimeters longer than its predecessor. The air resistance could also be reduced by 14% by reducing the height (approx. 2.5 cm): The frontal area is now 2.19 m². The c w value is 0.29 ( Bluemotion version 0.27).

In 2012, VW stated that it had reduced the curb weight of the Golf VII compared to the Golf VI (depending on the model) by up to 100 kilograms. In fact, the curb weight of the version with the smallest gasoline engine has been reduced by 24 kg through the use of high-strength steel, that of the 1.6 TDI BlueMotion Technology by 23 kg and that of the 2.0 TDI BlueMotion Technology by 11 kg. According to VW, the luggage compartment volume has increased by 30 to 380 liters; with the rear seats folded down, it is 1270 liters (Golf VI: 1305 liters). The ADAC determined with its measuring method, a 45 liters lower luggage space volume as in the Gulf VI. The fuel tank is now 5 liters smaller than before; it holds 50 liters or 55 liters in the all-wheel drive version.

The external appearance was developed under the direction of Marc Lichte and Philipp Römers. Thomasz Bachorski was responsible for the interior and Andreu Sola for the lights.

Production data

Production started in early August 2012. The dealers in Austria presented it to the public for the first time on November 8, 2012; in Germany on November 10, 2012. On April 9, 2013, production of the GTI started at the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg .

Production of the estate version Golf VII Variant began in April 2013 at the Volkswagen plant in Zwickau and has been delivered since the end of July 2013.

At the beginning of 2017, all models were given a facelift.

The GTE was not available for nine months from May 2018 due to delivery bottlenecks .

From summer 2018 the GTI was no longer available, only the GTI Performance was still available.

From January 2019 a new variant of the GTI was offered, the GTI TCR .

From March 2019 the GTD could no longer be ordered either.

From April 2019, only 5-door models could be ordered.

The production of the sedan was stopped in December 2019. Since November 15, 2019, only warehouse vehicles have been available.

In June 2020, the option to order the e-Golf was also discontinued, but existing orders are still being produced.

Furnishing

Equipment lines

The basic “Trendline” equipment of the Golf was initially sold for € 16,975 and includes an automatic start-stop system , a braking energy recovery system , a five-inch touchscreen in the center console, air conditioning and a multi-collision brake . This brakes the car after a first collision so that it can still be steered, but is decelerated so much that a second collision is weakened or prevented as far as possible. A 4Motion all-wheel drive can also be ordered for the 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI diesel engines, each with a manual transmission .

With the "Comfortline" and "Highline" additional extras are added. The higher lines can be ordered with various special equipment that is not available for the "Trendline". The GTD, GTI Performance, R and GTE models have their own equipment lines, which are located above the "Highline".

Driver assistance systems

Adaptive cruise control radar sensor (LRR3)

In addition to the multi-collision brake, a tire pressure monitoring system is one of the standard driver assistance systems.

An emergency braking assistant is available which, as a precautionary measure, tightens the seat belts on the front seats and closes the windows and sunroof in the event of an emergency braking . A city emergency braking function detects possible collisions and automatically initiates emergency braking at speeds below 30 km / h. In addition, glare-free high beam , a lane departure warning , an adaptive cruise control (ACC), here are previous models with the LRR3 Bosch (see photo) equipped, a Attention Assist , a traffic sign recognition and a high-beam automatic available.

Technical specifications

As with the first Golf, the engine is installed transversely and drives the front wheels, which are individually suspended from MacPherson struts and wishbones . The rear axle of the Golf VII is a multi-link axle from an engine output of 90 kW (122 hp) as in the Golf V and Golf VI . In vehicles with a weaker engine,  a torsion beam axle is installed , as was the case with the Golf IV . It is more compact, lighter and cheaper to manufacture.

36 percent of the self-supporting sheet steel body of the Golf VII is made from hot-formed high-strength or ultra-high-strength steels.

The model has been available as an e-Golf electric car since February 2014 . It has three different driving modes: Normal, Eco and Eco +. In them, the power of the electric motor and the maximum speed are limited differently. It also offers a regenerative brake (recuperation), the effect of which can be changed in three stages. The range according to the NEDC driving cycle is 190 kilometers, and according to the factory specifications, 130 to 190 kilometers in practical terms. Fast charging via CCS is subject to a surcharge.

In August 2014, the Golf GTE was released, a plug-in hybrid version with a combustion engine and an electric motor (known as the Golf Twin-Drive before its premiere ). According to the NEDC driving cycle , the electric range is 50 kilometers, the total range 939 kilometers.

A plug-in hybrid drive is used in the Golf GTE, which is designed based on the GTI . The combined maximum output is 150 kW (204 PS). The vehicle can be used both as a hybrid and purely electrically. The electric range is up to 50 km.

Externally, the models differ in the blue design of the red decorative elements on the GTI (lettering on the back, colored band on the radiator grille) and the C-shaped daytime running lights on the front. The connection for the charging cable is located behind the brand logo in the radiator grille . The technical basis is the same as that of the Audi A3 e-tron presented in 2013 .

2014 model

The e-Golf is of a permanent magnet - synchronous machine with a peak power of 85 kW (115 hp) at 3000 min -1 driven. It acts on the front wheels via a gear reduction. The maximum speed of the vehicle is limited to 140 km / h, from 0 to 100 km / h the car accelerates in 10.4 seconds. The average energy consumption in the NEDC is 12.7 kWh per 100 km.

The traction battery has a mass of 310 kg and consists of 27 modules with a total of 264 lithium-ion accumulator cells from the supplier Panasonic / Sanyo . Each cell has a charge carrier capacity of 25 Ah, the cell voltage is 3.67 V. The connection of three parallel branches with 88 cells in series results in a nominal voltage of 323 V and an energy of 24.2 kWh, of which 21.2 kWh is usable. The traction battery is not actively cooled (passive cooling by airflow).

The interior of the e-Golf is air-conditioned with an electric air conditioning compressor and high-voltage heating with a maximum output of 5.5 kW as standard . Since no waste heat from an internal combustion engine can be used to heat the interior, PTC heating elements heat a cooling liquid, which transfers the heat to the interior via a heat exchanger .

Options for the e-Golf include a heat pump , a heated windscreen and the DC quick charging facility CCS with 40 kW. The heat pump makes it possible to utilize the power loss of the power electronics and the electrical machine for heating the interior, whereby the range can be increased in comparison to pure high-voltage heating.

2017 model

VW e-Golf (2017-2020)

In the course of the facelift at the end of 2016, the e-Golf was also revised. The electric machine now 100 kW (136 hp) at 3300 min -1 . The lithium-ion cells of the accumulator come from the supplier Samsung SDI and their charge carrier capacity has been increased to 37 Ah, which increases the energy of the accumulator to 35.8 kWh. The mass of the battery is 318 kg. Deliveries of the revised e-Golf started in 2017. In addition to Wolfsburg, the e-Golf has also been produced in the Transparent Factory in Dresden since April 3, 2017 .

Visually, the e-Golf differs only slightly from the Golf with a combustion engine. Like all Volkswagen electric and hybrid vehicles , the front is adorned with C-shaped daytime running lights. The upper part of the grille has a blue trim and is closed for improved aerodynamics. The newly presented model came to a c w value of 0.281. The magnesium rims are extremely light, aerodynamically optimized and based on the design of the wheels of the XL1 .

The basic equipment of the e-Golf is significantly more extensive than that of the internal combustion engine-powered Golf models. It is based on the "Comfortline" equipment line. Automatic air conditioning and Volkswagen's infotainment system are built into every e-Golf as standard.
