The Polish Autostrada A6 is a largely completed, partly also to be modernized, toll-free motorway section , which bypasses Szczecin from west to east. The A6 has a total length of around 30 kilometers and serves as a continuation of the German Autobahn 11 coming from Berlin . The modernization of the former Reichsautobahn, which has been ongoing since the 1990s, should be completed by the end of 2019. Completion has been delayed, however, after the GDDKiA terminated several construction contracts due to financial difficulties facing the construction company .
history
The autobahn was built in the “ Third Reich ” up to its current end near Lenz (Stargard / Massow exit), with the last few kilometers only being one-lane. Originally an extension to Elbing and thus a connection to the autobahn to Königsberg (Prussia) starting there was planned. This was a difficult undertaking at first, because East Prussia was separated from the rest of the state by the separation under the Versailles Treaty and was thus an exclave . The Polish government refused to build a highway through its territory. After the conquest of Poland in World War II , the line to Rummelsburg and in two short sections in the former corridor and south of Danzig were put under construction, but all work was stopped due to the war in 1942.
In the network plan for the Polish motorways and expressways from 1945, a continuation of the route into the Gdansk area is planned. This connection is now realized as S6 .
Construction and planning
The GDDKiA plans to upgrade the section between the nodes Kijewo and Rzęśnica to the motorway . To achieve this, further modernization work is necessary. These were divided into several stages.
First, the modernization of the road surface and the lighting was carried out on a 2.2 km long section that begins about one kilometer east of the existing Kijewo motorway junction and ends about 500 meters east of the newly planned Szczecin-Dąbie motorway junction. The works began on September 12, 2011 with the signing of the contract with the construction company Budimex and ended with the handover on December 21, 2012. The construction costs amounted to 15 million zlotys .
The next stage involved the construction of a new Szczecin-Dąbie motorway junction. The tender was launched in February 2012. After several protests from various construction companies, the contract between GDDKiA and Eurovia Polska was signed on July 2, 2013. The end of the construction work was planned for July 2014, the opening took place on June 17, 2014. The construction costs amounted to 16 million zlotys.
One of the next stages of the remodeling is one of about a kilometer long motorway section, the east begins one kilometer of the node Kijewo and ends with this, and the node Kijewo itself. In addition, the conversion of the node Rzęśnica to be grade- node and the construction of a wildlife crossing west of the Rzęśnica node planned. Finally, the remaining 3.5 km long section, which begins about 500 meters east of the Szczecin Dąbie junction and ends at the Rzęśnica junction, is to be modernized. All of these stages were planned to be completed by the end of 2019. [outdated]
In addition, the section of the S3 and S6 between the Rzęśnica and Goleniów Północ junctions was also originally intended to be expanded into a motorway . This would make the entire section, starting at the German border, to the Goleniów-Północ motorway junction, where the A6 should split into the S3 and S6, accessible as a motorway. This has since been given up due to funding difficulties. This section will remain signposted as an expressway .
