Buddy Bear
The Buddy Bear ( English buddy "Kumpel", "Freund") is an individually painted life-size bear sculpture made of weather-resistant glass fiber reinforced plastic . The Buddy Bear adapts an idea that has been successful in other large cities since the late 1990s (see animal parades ), originally initiated by the Zurich Cow Culture in 1998.
history
Development of the archetypes in 2001
The Buddy Bear was developed in 2001 by Eva and Klaus Herlitz in collaboration with the Austrian artist and sculptor Roman Strobl . Four different bear models were designed: a “friend” standing on all fours, a “dancer” standing on his hind legs, an “acrobat” doing a headstand and a sitting “friend no. 2”.
In 2001, around 350 bears were painted in Berlin and placed around the city; it should be a one-time action. Because this symbol was well received by Berliners and tourists, the Berlin Senate extended the campaign several times and it has been running without restrictions since the 2010s. Many of the bears are no longer in Berlin. A total of almost 2,000 bears were produced (as of May 2017), 1,600 are outside of Berlin and Brandenburg .
Brief description and locations
The two meters high and around 50 kilograms heavy, upright bears are painted by artists from all over the world. A studio in Berlin-Tempelhof is used for this; then the bears are mounted on a concrete base outdoors. The initiators recommend hiring professional artists for painting. A well-known exception is the buddy in front of the Lichtenberg town hall , which was designed by a group of students.
Politicians and business managers have meanwhile spread Berlin's symbolic bearers: for example, Queen Elizabeth II of England received a bear, and then Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented a member of the Kennedy family (Ted Kennedy) with a friend designed in honor of John F. Kennedy , which was placed in the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston .
In front of numerous German embassies and consulates general (e.g. in Washington , Brasília , Tokyo , Dhaka , St. Petersburg , Taipei , Paris , New Delhi ), Buddy Bears promote a tolerant, free and democratic Germany. In 2016, the Federal Foreign Office decided that Buddy Bears should gradually be set up in front of all German diplomatic missions abroad. The design should be entrusted to artists from the respective country.
Special events
Many Buddy Bears found a new home at or after city events : 18 bears traveled to Buenos Aires for the Long Night of the Museums in 2004 , in connection with the Urban Sculptures exhibition , 23 Buddy Bears were designed by Chinese artists in the same year and have been in Shanghai ever since . In 2005 and 2006, 75 Buddy Bears, which were designed by local artists, shaped the streets and alleys of St. Gallen and were later auctioned for the benefit of a children's facility in Switzerland. The street bears around the world with their raised arms of the standing buddy bear are focused on spreading friendliness and optimism.
The Buddy Bear kicker was a special event : in 2006, Berlin was caught in a World Cup football fever - the world's largest kicker was in the Kranzler Eck ( Kurfürstendamm ) in Berlin. Two years later, this Buddy Bear kicker delighted football fans in Vienna on the occasion of the European Championship .
A United Buddy Bear traveled to Paris in December 2009 . This bear, designed by the French artist Bruno di Martino , stood for 4 days in the foyer of the Salon 2009 de la Société des Beaux-Art in the Louvre , an exhibition under the patronage of the President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy . In 2010 the Buddy Bear Quadriga was ceremoniously unveiled in the presence of the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit , and the actress and ambassador of this Quadriga, Rebecca Lina .
At the Expo 2010 in Shanghai , a big Buddy Bear represented the capital Berlin in front of the backdrop of the Brandenburg Gate in the German Pavilion. Balancity - a city in balance . Berlin Partner GmbH from Fuenfwerken Design AG had designed it on behalf of the Expo. In 2012, on the occasion of the opening of the TU Berlin campus in El Gouna, a buddy bear was unveiled as a symbol of the special connection between the two study locations.
The first interactive Buddy Bear has been around since the beginning of 2015 . It is on Washingtonplatz behind Berlin Central Station ; it glows and changes color as soon as you hug it.
The Human Rights Buddy Bear has been standing in the courtyard of the Foreign Office in Berlin since March 2015 - the logo and the word “Human Rights” are artistically implemented in seven languages on the front . On the back of the bear reference is made to Article 1 of the UN Charter of Human Rights : “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. ”.
United Buddy Bears
The United Buddy Bears project began in 2002. After the successful Buddy Bear Berlin Show 2001 and the street bears , which was so named by the Berlin Senate , this was a further idea.
Berlin is a multicultural city, the bears are an element of the welcoming culture for people from all over the world. According to the ideas of the initiators, the popularity of the bears should serve to give people from all over the world food for thought to better understand one another - understanding the different living conditions in other countries and dealing with different cultures as a basis for peaceful coexistence and coexistence. From this basic consideration, the idea of the United Buddy Bears was developed under the motto “We have to get to know each other better, then we can understand each other better, trust more and live together better!”.
Charitable purpose
According to the initiators, the aim of the Buddy Bear campaigns is to support children's aid organizations through auctions and other activities related to the Buddy Bears. Therefore, companies, sports clubs and celebrities have been committed to the project right from the start, including the Berlin city cleaning companies and transport companies .
Buddy bear activities have made it possible to provide help for children in need - donations and auctions of buddy bears have so far raised over 2.3 million euros for UNICEF and various local children's aid organizations at home and abroad. In order to be able to help children quickly, specifically and unbureaucratically in individual cases, Eva Herlitz founded the association Buddy Bear Help e. V.
United Buddy Bears - World Tour
2002 to 2005
The initiators Eva and Klaus Herlitz intended to advertise tolerance and international understanding through the image of the peaceful coexistence of the bears and at the same time through auctions and other charitable activities, donations for worldwide children's aid organizations (UNICEF, SOS Children's Villages) but also for local, smaller organizations such as to generate the children's and youth work “Die Arche” . The circle of these United Buddy Bears now consists of up to 152 bears, each of which represents a country accepted by the United Nations and was designed by an artist from the country concerned. The event will be by the organizers and The Art of Tolerance ( The Art of Tolerance called). Admission is generally free and enables whole school classes to visit the exhibition. So far, over 35 million visitors worldwide have seen these exhibitions (as of September 2015).
The circle project was first presented in the summer of 2002 on Pariser Platz in Berlin. The Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit , opened the exhibition in June. Numerous prominent guests came during the first exhibition, such as the then Federal President Johannes Rau and UNICEF world ambassador Sir Peter Ustinov . In 2003 the project was shown again in Berlin, which has now been opened by Peter Ustinov. Ustinov had advocated that Iraq should also be represented in the United Buddy Bears circle.
Since then, the bears have been promoting peaceful coexistence between peoples, religions and cultures on their constant world tour. They were exhibited in 2004 in Kitzbühel (Austria), Hong Kong (under the patronage of Jackie Chan ) and Istanbul . Tokyo followed in 2005 (the exhibition was opened by Federal President Horst Köhler and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi ; according to Ambassador Henrik Schmiegelow, around three million people visited the exhibition in Roppongi Hills ) - and Seoul in autumn . There, in the Olympic Park , bears from South and North Korea, designed by artists from the respective parts of the country, stood peacefully side by side, paw to paw.

2006 to 2009
Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer attested the United Buddy Bears back in 2003 that they were "an impressive work of art and at the same time a symbol for the cultural richness of our one world, which through peaceful coexistence can be much more than just the sum of its parts". The Goethe-Institut characterized the United Buddy Bears as a “project that unites people”. Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier described them in a greeting as "Ambassador of Berlin and a cosmopolitan Germany".
In the summer of 2006 the United Buddy Bears could be seen again in Berlin. They stood on Bebelplatz in Berlin-Mitte. Due to the historical location, a controversial discussion arose in Berlin in spring 2006. The Berlin Senator for Culture Thomas Flierl expressed his displeasure with the bears, since the Bebelplatz is a memorial to the book burning of 1933 . This list was welcomed by the Jewish community in Berlin as “an upgrade of the Bebelplatz”. Likewise, the neighboring Catholic community of St. Hedwig's Cathedral , the Israeli artist and sculptor Micha Ullman , the Foreign Office , the Berlin Senate and the Berlin-Mitte district gave positive statements about the installation on Bebelplatz. The official opening of the circle on June 15, 2006 took place in the presence of Federal Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul , Mayor Karin Schubert and around 60 ambassadors. The exhibition visit by UN special envoy Mia Farrow was intended to draw attention to the refugees in the Darfur region (Sudan) on World Refugee Day .
After the exhibition in Berlin, the circle went on a world tour again and was first presented in autumn 2006 on Karlsplatz in Vienna , under the patronage of Christiane Hörbiger . In the spring of 2007, the United Buddy Bears exhibition on the banks of the Nile in Cairo was opened by Egypt's first lady, Suzanne Mubarak , on the island of Zamalek . The patron on the German side was Hans-Dietrich Genscher . In the summer, under the patronage of Iris Berben, the long-planned exhibition in Jerusalem , on Safra Square, became a reality. 132 countries stood peacefully hand in hand , including Israel between Iran and Iraq. And Palestine has also been represented in this exhibition that brings people together for the first time since 2007. The Palestine Bear was designed by Ibrahim Hazimeh , President of the Palestinian National Committee of Fine Arts at AIAP / UNESCO . Ban Ki-moon , Secretary General of the United Nations , certified the exhibitions of the United Buddy Bears in October 2007 that they “show the high creativity of artists from many different countries” and thus “carry a message of harmony and peace out into the world” .
In May / June 2008 the exhibition came to Warsaw . On the Plac Zamkowy (German: Schlossplatz) - in tradition and as a reminder of the Weimar Triangle - the opening was jointly organized by the three mayors of the cities of Warsaw ( Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz ), Berlin (Klaus Wowereit) and Paris (Vice Mayor Anne Hidalgo ) performed. In summer 2008 the United Buddy Bears made a guest appearance in Stuttgart on the Schloßplatz around the anniversary column. The exhibition was opened by Mayor Wolfgang Schuster .
The German Embassy in North Korea brought the bears to the city center of Pyongyang in autumn 2008 . They stood at the foot of Moran Hill, near the Kim Il-sung statue. It was the first art exhibition that came from abroad and at the same time the first that was freely accessible to everyone in North Korea. The Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations wrote on October 20, 2008 (ifa cultural exchange): “The exhibition in Pyongyang will certainly not change the world, but it will change the world in North Korea very much.” The FAZ was surprised that the United Buddy Bears succeeded to arrive in the isolated Pyongyang as “the first public art exhibition from abroad that is accessible to everyone”.
In spring 2009, the grand opening of the first exhibition on the American continent was celebrated on the Plaza San Martin in the Argentine metropolis of Buenos Aires ; the Philharmonic from Buenos Aires played. The opening in front of around 500 invited guests was carried out by the mayor Mauricio Macri . Under the direction of the Minister of Culture, Hernàn Lombardi, the city was able to look back on 7 weeks of exhibition time with many events and hundreds of thousands of visitors. The 17th exhibition was opened in May in Montevideo in the presence of the President of Uruguay , Tabaré Vázquez , the Mayor of Montevideos, Ricardo Ehrlich and the German Ambassador to Uruguay, Bernhard Graf von Waldersee .
2010-2014
The United Buddy Bears overwintered in Berlin for the first time and were exhibited from the end of November 2009 to mid-April 2010 in the Berlin Central Station (U 55) in the so-called Dudlerpassage . The exhibition - under the patronage of Federal Minister Ursula von der Leyen - was opened by the actress and special ambassador of the United Buddy Bears, Dennenesch Zoudé , as well as the Ambassador of Kazakhstan , Nurlan Onschanow , who announced that the next exhibition in the summer of 2010 in the heart of the Kazakh Capital Astana will be presented.
Akim ('Mayor') Imanghali Tasmaghambetow of Astana officially opened the aforementioned Buddy Bear exhibition in front of around two thousand invited guests and with many artistic and folkloric contributions from the ethnic groups of Kazakhstan in mid-May 2010 instead of in the summer . The exhibition, which lasted two and a half months, was located at the foot of the Bayterek Tower .
The 20th exhibition of the world tour, which Mayor Jussi Pajunen opened on Senate Square in Helsinki , took place in Northern Europe in September and October 2010. The German Embassy and the Goethe Institute in Finland were responsible for this exhibition , with the support of the City of Helsinki and DB Schenker .
The German Embassy in Sofia organized the Germany Weeks in Bulgaria under the motto Diversity in Germany . The Germany Weeks officially opened in early April 2011 with the United Buddy Bears art exhibition. The exhibition symbolizes international understanding and tolerance. The patronage was the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, and the Mayoress of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova . The 22nd exhibition was opened in the hometown of the Buddy Bears on the occasion of the anniversary celebrations on the Kurfürstendamm on June 26, 2011 and was present there for over 3 months. The next trip took the Buddy Bears to Asia again, first to Southeast Asia, to the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur . Under the patronage of the Sultan of Selangor, the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad bin Ismail, and the Minister of Tourism, Datuk Victor Wee, opened the exhibition around the fountain in front of the Pavilion KL , on the Boulevard Bukit Bintang , in December 2011 . in a festive, pre-Christmas setting, before it ended after almost 3 months and officially registered 2.5 million visitors with a ceremony in favor of children's aid activities.
As part of the Germany Year Germany and India 2011–2012 , the United Buddy Bears were guests in New Delhi from March to May 2012 . Sheila Dikshit (Chief Minister of Delhi), Klaus Wowereit (Governing Mayor of Berlin) and Eva and Klaus Herlitz (initiators of the United Buddy Bears) opened the exhibition in Central Park at Connaught Place, in the heart of New Delhi. Thanks to the support of the Hamburg Süd shipping company and the logistician DB Schenker, the total of 147 bears were then transported in eight 40 'containers to St. Petersburg , where the exhibition near the Winter Palace ( Hermitage ) was hosted by Ulrich Brandenburg, the German ambassador in Moscow, at the end of June 2012 , was opened in Russia as part of the Year of Germany .
The exhibition opened in Paris in autumn 2012: The United Buddy Bears are ambassadors for Berlin and Germany and are a reminder in France that the foundation stone of Franco-German friendship was laid 50 years ago with the signing of the Élysée Treaty on January 22, 1963 . "Only on the solid foundation of Franco-German friendship can we succeed in shaping today's world," said Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle - in line with the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the EU .
The exhibition was shown on the occasion of the German Year in Brazil - under the patronage of Frank-Walter Steinmeier - in May 2014 for the first time in a Portuguese-speaking country, in Brazil , in Rio de Janeiro , on the Copacabana . It was also free for all visitors to see on the beach in the Leme district during the World Cup . The initiative came from the German Consulate General as well as the city of Rio de Janeiro - the program included, among other things, local workshops that dealt in detail with the history and the message of the "Buddy Bears". Over a million visitors saw the exhibition.
In mid-December 2014, Cuba and the USA announced that they would normalize their relations after more than 50 years of diplomatic ice age. This was the reason for the Federal Foreign Office to send the United Buddy Bears to Havana from January to March 2015 . In the Plaza San Francisco de Asis , in the heart of the old town, the exhibition was organized by the city historian and unofficial mayor of the Cuban capital, Eusebio Leal Spengler , as well as by Irmgard Fellner (AA Berlin), Peter Scholz (German Ambassador to Cuba) and the initiators Eva and Klaus Herlitz officially opened.
From 2015
The eight containers with around 140 United Buddy Bears were shipped from the Cuban port of Mariel to Chile in mid-March 2015 , where the following exhibition opened in the Parque Bicentenario in the Vitacura district of Santiago at the end of April . The Chilean Foreign Minister Heraldo Benjamín Muñoz congratulated "all the artists who have contributed to making the" United Buddy Bears "an important cultural and charitable event of international importance during its 14-year journey through five continents".
The second exhibition in Southeast Asia followed in autumn 2016 ; the '' Chief Minister of Penang '' Lim Guan Eng opened the county in the capital of Penang , in George Town . In 2017 the exhibition returned to its hometown Berlin after six years. On the Christmas illuminated Walter-Benjamin-Platz ( Leibniz-Kolonnaden ), near the Kurfürstendamm , the 141 bears, designed by 141 artists from 141 countries - during the Advent season and at the turn of the year 2017/2018 - set an example for tolerance and a peaceful one Together. Marianne Freifrau von Weizsäcker was the patron of the exhibition . The opening was made by Sawsan Chebli , State Secretary in the Berlin Senate, the initiators Eva and Klaus Herlitz , together with representatives of seven major world religions, including Christians, Jews and Muslims.
At the invitation of the German Embassy in Riga , the exhibition was on view in July and August 2018 on Cathedral Square in the Latvian capital. The bears' first visit to the Baltic States was a gift from Germany to the people of Latvia on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the state.
In November 2018, the Ibero-American Summit took place in the World Heritage City of Antigua (Guatemala). A conference at the 22 heads of state or government from the countries of the Americas and the Iberian Peninsula came together. Germany took part as a guest of honor. As a gift from Germany, a Buddy Bear was presented by the German Ambassador Harald Klein on behalf of Chancellor Angela Merkel . From April to June 2019 the United Buddy Bears will have their first "double exhibition" in one country: First in the former capital Antigua, located in the central highlands of Guatemala , on the Plaza Mayor, then in today's capital Guatemala City , just 50 km away . in the Plaza de la Constitución .
On the occasion of the 65th birthday of Tierpark Berlin , the United Buddy Bears returned to Berlin after many stops. At the opening of this new highlight of the zoo in Friedrichsfelde, zoo and zoo director Andreas Knieriem also welcomed Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey , who, together with the governing mayor Michael Müller, has taken on the patronage of the exhibition. "With the Tierpark Berlin as a place of diversity, this extraordinary exhibition fits perfectly into the natural backdrop. On their world tour through five continents so far, the United Buddy Bears are promoting tolerance and understanding between peoples, cultures and religions. I wish that this important message will continue to be carried into the world through this project. "
Many more cities are in the pipeline, including Athens , Beijing , Singapore and Prague .

United Buddy Bears - The Minis
Many of the international artists have also designed a small United Buddy Bear one meter tall for their country, which together also form a circle. This circle, called The Minis , was exhibited at different locations in Germany, such as the Sony Center in Berlin, Frankfurt Airport , the Babelsberg Film Park , Wasserburg on Lake Constance and the Osnabrück Zoo . The first exhibitions outside of Germany took place in Bratislava ( Slovakia ) and Borås ( Sweden ) in 2012 .
For ten years the Buddy Bears have been traveling around the world as ambassadors for peace, tolerance and international understanding. Ex-Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said, “In 2013 there is no better place for you to take a break than here in Germany, in Gladbeck , where we are celebrating the year of tolerance as part of the Luther Decade ! The Martin Luther Forum Ruhr brings Luther and Buddy Bears together. A clear signal that we need tolerance and international understanding, especially when dealing with foreign religions and cultures, with people of different or non-believers. This is not done with isolation, but only through a real dialogue - according to the motto of the Buddy Bears initiators: We have to get to know each other better, then we can understand each other better, trust more and live together better. "
The smaller version of the United Bears was present at the end of the Germany Year in Russia in Yekaterinburg ( Russia ). The opening was made by the mayor Alexander Edmundowitsch Jakob, the German consul general Andreas Klaßen and the initiators, Klaus Herlitz. At the end of 2013 the one meter tall bears were exhibited in Calais ( France ).
In summer 2015 the "United Buddy Bears - The Minis" traveled to Kazan , the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan ( Russia ). In the summer of 2017, they were on Wittenbergplatz in Berlin-Schöneberg , not far from KaDeWe .
criticism
In the Sculpture.Projects 2007, Andreas Siekmann included Trickle down with his contribution . The public space in the age of its privatization is critical of this form of urban art , in which the urban space is taken over by private companies. For his work of art, Siekmann said he smashed 13 figures with the help of a scrap press and placed a ball formed from the remains - together with the press - in front of the Erbdrostenhof in Münster.
