The Ford P2 was the second new construction of a car after the Second World War , which was produced by the German Ford works based on the smaller "Weltkugeltaunus" Ford G13 . The upper middle class vehicle was offered between 1957 and 1960 as the Taunus 17M and was also called the "Baroque Taunus " because of its shape . Approximately 240,000 P2 were manufactured in three years. In 1960 it was replaced by the more businesslike Ford P3 ("Line of Reason").

Model history

General

Rear view

The first sketches for the new car date from the spring of 1955. Originally, the engine of the then new Taunus 15M with a displacement of 1.5 liters and 55 hp (40 kW) was to be used. The new body turned out so big and heavy that the performance with this engine would have been below that of the smaller Taunus 15m; therefore the P2 received a 1.7-liter engine with 60 hp (44 kW). The gearbox had three gears and a steering wheel shift, the power was transferred to the rigid rear axle suspended from leaf springs.

In 1957, the Baroque Taunus was the first German production car with MacPherson struts at the front, like the French Vedette and the British Ford Consul before that . The steering gear was designed as a roller steering . There were hydraulically operated drum brakes on all wheels.

" Gelsenkirchener Barock " and "Flying Carpet" are a few nicknames for Ford's first mid-range model after the war. Flying carpet because the engineers - including French - based themselves on the chassis of the successor to the Ford Vedette , which came onto the market as Simca Vedette . The body of the Taunus was reminiscent of the Ford Fairlane and was equipped - unique in this way in German cars - with lavish chrome decoration, a forward-sloping bow and tail fins in the style of the US road cruiser. For higher demands there was also a 17m deLuxe, which could come up with a two-tone paintwork, an interior with brocade fabric and a little more chrome. The sweeping body overhangs, tail fins and the lavish chrome jewelry were discussed in the trade press and occasionally referred to derisively as the “Gelsenkirchen Baroque”.

variants

The P2 was available in two-door (T), four-door (F), box (KA) and station wagon versions (KO). Accordingly, the type designation CL stood for the extremely rare convertible version of the body builder Deutsch in Cologne-Braunsfeld.

The automatic clutch “ Saxomat ” and an overdrive from BorgWarner were available for power transmission .

After the factory break in 1959, for the 1960 model year, the models were slightly revised. Instead of a folding roof, there was now a steel sliding roof; and the roof as such was flatter and 3 cm lower. The chrome strips on the fittings were now fluted vertically and horizontally; The Cologne coat of arms was attached to the front fenders. In addition, the optionally available four-speed transmission was now fully synchronized. The basic models now also received the one-piece radiator grille of the DeLuxe models; the previous grill with the four upper slots was omitted.

In 1960 the P2- "Baroque Taunus " was replaced by the P3 - "Bathtub Taunus" .

The Taunus 17M P2 was produced in 239,978 copies, including 45,468 station wagons and exported to the USA, among others.

Its popular successor, the P3, was much more modern and quickly made the P2 unpopular as a used car, as its shape looked old-fashioned to the taste of the late 1950s. The great susceptibility to rust also contributed to the bad reputation. The cars disappeared quickly from the street scene. A P2 in good condition is an absolute rarity as there are hardly any spare parts left.
