Frahelž (German Frahelsch , older Freihals ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic . It is located 24 kilometers northeast of the city center of České Budějovice and belongs to the Okres Jindřichův Hradec .

geography

Frahelž is located on the left bank of the Lainsitz in the area of the UNESCO Třeboňsko Biosphere Reserve between the Lainsitz in the plain of the Wittingau basin . The place is surrounded by several large fish ponds, of which the Ponědražský rybník is the largest.

Neighboring towns are Vlkov in the north, Val and Vyšné in the northeast, Klec and Lomnice nad Lužnicí in the south, Záblatí and Ponědraž in the west and Ponědrážka in the northwest.

history

The village was founded at the beginning of the 14th century; the first documentary mention dates from 1549. The mill owner who lived on the Lainsitz enjoyed the privilege of being a freeman and was thus exempt from forced labor . The current spelling developed from the original place name "Freihals".

It is said that Jan Žižka was cured in Frahelž in 1424 ; This year was also carved into a boulder that was removed when the river was regulated. Witigone Jan von Stráž belonged to the owners ; his successors added the village to the Bechyně manor .
