history
Creation and changes of the administrative structure
The Düsseldorf-Mettmann district was formed on August 1, 1929 as part of the law on the municipal restructuring of the Rhenish-Westphalian industrial area from parts of the dissolved districts of Düsseldorf , Essen and Mettmann . Larger parts of these districts had been incorporated into the urban districts of Düsseldorf , Duisburg , Mülheim an der Ruhr , Essen , Remscheid and Barmen-Elberfeld (later Wuppertal), so that the remaining areas were too small for their own district.
The district initially included the cities and communities Angermund , Breitscheid - Selbeck , Dreihonnschaften , Eckamp , Eggerscheidt , Erkrath , Gruiten , Haan , Hardenberg , Hasselbeck-Krumbach , Heiligenhaus , Hilden , Hösel , Homberg-Bracht-Bellscheidt , Hubbelrath , Kalkum , Kettwig , Langenberg , Laupendahl , Lintorf , Ludenberg , Meiersberg , Mettmann , Metzkausen , Millrath , Mintard , Ratingen , Schöller , Schwarzbach , Velbert , Wittlaer and Wülfrath . In the following period there were several changes to the administrative structure:
- The community of Dreihonnschaften was incorporated into the city of Kettwig in October 1929.
- Laupendahl was largely incorporated into the town of Kettwig in 1930.
- In 1930 Mintard was divided between the city of Kettwig and the community of Breitscheid.
- Breitscheid-Selbeck gave its district Selbeck in 1930 to the independent city of Mülheim an der Ruhr . At the same time, parts of Hösel, Laupendahl and Mintard were added to the community, which was henceforth called Breitscheid .
- Eckamp was incorporated into Ratingen in 1930.
- Bockum and Kalkum were incorporated into Wittlaer in 1930.
- In 1930 Ludenberg was divided between Erkrath, Hasselbeck-Krumbach and Hubbelrath.
- Hasselbeck-Krumbach and Schwarzbach were merged in 1930 to form the Hasselbeck community.
- The town of Hardenberg, also called Hardenberg-Neviges , was renamed Neviges in 1935.
- The area of the old Honschaft Oefte was ceded by Heiligenhaus to Kettwig on April 1st, 1936.
- Millrath was renamed Hochdahl in 1938 .
- Hasselbeck was renamed Hasselbeck-Schwarzbach in 1947 .
- The Ratingen-Land office was renamed to Angerland office in 1950 .
- Homberg-Bracht-Bellscheidt and Meiersberg were merged in 1967 to form the municipality of Homberg-Meiersberg .
On October 1, 1969, the district became the Düsseldorf-Mettmann district.
Structure before the regional reform in 1975

On the occasion of the North Rhine-Westphalian regional reform , the district was renamed the Mettmann district on January 1, 1975 . - Gruiten was incorporated into the city of Haan.
- Metzkausen was incorporated into the city of Mettmann.
- Langenberg, Neviges and Velbert were combined to form the city of Velbert.
- Parts of Homberg-Meiersberg came to Mettmann and Heiligenhaus.
