The 1987/88 NHL season was the 71st season in the National Hockey League . 21 teams played 80 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Edmonton Oilers after a 4-0 win in the final series against the Boston Bruins . It was the Oilers' fourth championship in five years in their final season with Wayne Gretzky . This missed a fifth of the season due to an injury, so that the only time he could not win the Hart Memorial Trophy in the 1980s and also did not lead the scorer rating. Both titles went to Mario Lemieux .

The best scorer among the rookies was Joe Nieuwendyk , who headed the rookie scorer list in all three categories with 51 goals, 41 assists and 92 points. Nieuwendyk also led the plus / minus ranking of the rookies with +20. The bad guy among the rookies was Richard Zemlak from Minnesota with 307 penalty minutes.
