history
Niederherweg was first mentioned in a document in 1557, but the time of origin of the settlement is assumed to be between 1400 and 1500 as a result of the late medieval expansion period.
In 1818 twelve people lived in the village. In 1838 Niederherweg belonged as Niedern-Herweg to the Ehringhauser peasantry within the Halver mayor . The place, which was categorized as a courtyard according to the location and distance table of the government district of Arnsberg , had four houses and an agricultural building at that time. At that time, 16 residents lived in the village, all of whom were Protestant.
The municipality encyclopedia for the province of Westphalia from 1887 gives a number of 20 inhabitants who lived in three houses.
Like the other -herweg places in Halver ( Oberherweg , Schröders Herweg , Mittelherweg , Neuenherweg , Herweger Schleifkotten ), the place name derives from the location on the Altstrasse from Cologne via Wipperfürth , Halver, Lüdenscheid , Werdohl and Arnsberg to Soest , a medieval one (According to other views, prehistoric ) trade , pilgrimage and military route that ran across the route north of Mittelherweg.
