history

Birkenbaum was first mentioned in a document in 1557, but the time of origin of the settlement is assumed to be between 1300 and 1400 following the second medieval clearing period. Birkenbaum was a split from Heinken-Hedfeld.

In 1818 ten residents lived in the village. In 1838 Birkenbaum belonged to the Lausberg farmers within the Halver mayor's office . The place, which was categorized as a courtyard according to the location and distance table of the government district of Arnsberg , had two houses at the time. At that time, 15 residents lived in the village, all of whom were Protestant.

The municipality encyclopedia for the province of Westphalia from 1887 gives a number of 13 residents who lived in two houses.

At Birkenbaum, a presumably prehistoric old road from Schwelm via Radevormwald to Wegerhof ran along the route of today's county road K3 , which was used as an iron and coal road.
