Carthausen is a village near Halver in the Märkisches Kreis in the administrative district of Arnsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia ( Germany ).

Carthausen is 310 meters above sea ​​level northeast of the main town in Halver at the confluence of the Schlechtenbach and the Bräumke . The place can be reached via the state road L868; there branches off a driveway that connects the other places in the Schlechtenbachtal such as Ober- and Mittelcarthausen , Solberg , Clev and Schlechtenbach . Another road branching off there leads to Wiene and Othmaringhausen . Other neighboring borders are Bruch , Lömmelscheid , Steinbach and the Heesfelder Hammer . The Susannenhöhe rises 350 meters above sea level to the southeast .

It was not until the middle of the 20th century that the spelling changed from Niederkarthausen to Niedercarthausen. Towards the end of the 20th century the prefix Niederweg was dropped and the place was only called Carthausen.

Carthausen was first mentioned in a document as Niederkarthausen in 1220, but the origin of the settlement is assumed to be between 600 and 700 during the time of the second Saxon conquest. Thus Carthausen is one of the earlier settlements in Halver.

In the Middle Ages , (Nieder-) Carthausen was a manor and manor house inhabited by aristocrats and secured by a moat . However, no particular mansion has survived. As (Nieder-) Carthausen in the 15./16. Developed into a manor in the 19th century , the farm was around 700 acres in size .

In 1818 15 people lived in the village. In 1838 Carthausen belonged to the Gloerfeld farmers under the name of Niedern-Karthausen within the Halver mayor .
