Ostendorf was first mentioned in documents in 1818 and 1839, but the time of origin of the settlement is presumed to be between 1300 and 1400 following the second medieval clearing period. Ostendorf was a Unterhof of Heesfeld.

In 1818 ten residents lived in the village. In 1838 Ostendorf belonged to the Oeckinghauser peasantry within the Halver mayor . The sound of Ortschafts- and removal table of the governmental district Arnsberg as Ackergut categorized place had at this time a house, a factory or mill and a farm building. At that time, nine people lived in the village, all of whom were Protestant.

The municipality encyclopedia for the province of Westphalia from 1887 gives a number of 24 inhabitants who lived in two houses.

Since the early Middle Ages (according to other sources, since prehistoric times) an important old road led past Ostendorf from Cologne via Wipperfürth , Halver, Lüdenscheid , Werdohl and Arnsberg to Soest , a trade , pilgrimage and military route . For this reason, bundles of hollow paths have been preserved in the forest south of Grünewald near the school .
