Alexandra Palace in London, venue of the World Darts Championship

The William Hill World Darts Championship 2022 was the 29th edition of the Darts World Championship hosted by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) and took place from December 15, 2021 to January 3, 2022. The venue was for the fifteenth time the Alexandra Palace (Ally Pally) in London .

In the final, the Scot Peter Wright won over the Englishman Michael Smith . Wright won his second world title, while Smith lost for the second time in a final.

The defending champion and often named Welshman Gerwyn Price had been eliminated in the quarter-finals against Smith, as was his compatriot Jonny Clayton , the player with the most major titles in the calendar year 2021 , in the second round. Three players had the world championship because of a positive test for SARS -CoV-2 have to stop prematurely, including the long-time world number one and co-favorite Michael van Gerwen .

Events in advance

On July 21, 2021 the PDC published the first information about the tournament. Among other things, the date and schedule were confirmed. It was also confirmed that over 3,000 spectators should attend the individual sessions.

On November 29, 2021 at 19:15 GMT (20:15 CET ) the individual games were drawn, which could be seen live on Sky Sports and on the PDC Facebook page. Also Sport1 offered a live stream on its website. Losers were the two former dart players Wayne Mardle and Colin Lloyd .

Tournament course

The world championship was traditionally opened with the first round encounter, the winner of which had to play against the reigning world champion in round 2. In the duel between the two Englishmen Ritchie Edhouse and Peter Hudson , Edhouse prevailed 3-2. Later that evening he faced defending champion Gerwyn Price from Wales, to whom he lost 3-1.

On the second day, the German Fabian Schmutzler - at 16 years of age, the second youngest World Cup participant in history - made his debut and lost to Ryan Meikle 3-0. The highlight of the second day of the tournament was the last game of the evening, in which the former world champions of two consecutive years Gary Anderson and Adrian Lewis faced each other. Anderson won 3-1.

On the third day the first seeded player was eliminated from the tournament, the Pole Krzysztof Ratajski . In addition, the Scot William Borland played a nine dart finish in his first round game against Bradley Brooks . It was also the first 9-darter with which a match was decided at a world championship. The following day the Lithuanian Darius Labanauskas also played a nine dart finish against Mike De Decker .

In the midday session of the fifth day of the tournament, a match was decided for the first time in the tournament using the two-clear-legs rule. The Englishman Ross Smith prevailed against his compatriot Stephen Bunting , who was eliminated as the second seeded player. In the evening session there was a new edition of the final of the Super League 2021 between Florian Hempel and Martin Schindler . At the second meeting of two Germans at a World Cup, Hempel prevailed this time. Especially in Great Britain, the following game between Steve Beaton and Fallon Sherrock was in the media focus. Beaton, who played his 31st World Cup, won against Sherrock, who became the first woman to win a World Cup game at the 2020 World Cup.

On tournament day six, Raymond van Barneveld , one of the PDC's most successful players, made his World Cup comeback; against the Filipino Lourence Ilagan he won 3-0. Before that, the Austrian Rusty-Jake Rodriguez had prevailed on his World Cup debut against Ben Robb from New Zealand. The following day Florian Hempel played his second game , beating world number five Dimitri Van den Bergh from Belgium 3-1. A little later, with the South African Devon Petersen against Raymond Smith from Australia, another seeded player was eliminated. The following day, two other seeded players were eliminated: Glen Durrant was defeated by the Irishman William O'Connor , who played the highest check-out with a 170, and Martijn Kleermaker eliminated the Australian Simon Whitlock, seeded in 20th place .

In the midday session of December 23rd, another seeded player in the second round, the Northern Irishman Brendan Dolan, lost to the Englishman Callan Rydz . The following game between Mensur Suljović from Austria and the Scottish Alan Soutar was the first match over the full distance. The Scot survived eight match darts from Suljović and played a 144 checkout to win the match in the decisive leg. In the evening, the fourth German participant, Gabriel Clemens , who was placed 25th, beat Lewis Williams from Welsh 3-0. In the following game two former world champions met again in the second round, the Englishman Rob Cross and Raymond van Barneveld from the Netherlands. In the first set van Barneveld prevailed, cheered on by the audience, and played the second 170 finish of the World Cup. However, Cross, who had only played 77 points in the average in the first set, fought his way back, winning three sets in a row and with it the match. A short time after the game, van Barneveld went straight to his hotel room because he was suffering from shortness of breath and fever; shortly afterwards, the Dutchman tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 .

After a three-day break over Christmas, the third round began on December 27th. In the first game of the lunchtime session, the Dutchman Dirk van Duijvenbode turned a 3-0 set deficit in his game against Ross Smith from England and made it into the round of 16 with 4: 3 sets. Michael Smith qualified in the second game of the session with a 4-2 win over Irishman William O'Connor for the round of 16. The last game in the afternoon was played by Florian Hempel and the Australian Raymond Smith . The Australian played over 100 points in the average in the first two sets and won the game with 4: 1 sets. In the evening, only two games took place due to another positive SARS-CoV-2 test by Vincent van der Voort . His opponent James Wade moved into the round of 16 without a fight. In the first game of the evening between Gerwyn Price and Kim Huybrechts from Belgium, the score was 3: 3 sets up to the sudden death leg. After Price had already led 2-0 legs in the seventh set, the Belgian fought back and equaled to 2-2. But Price got the upper hand and ended the game with his first match dart on double-20. In the second game of the evening there was a duel between Gabriel Clemens and Jonny Clayton . The latter played an average of 102.56 points despite a double rate of 37.5% and won with 4-0 sets.

The second day of the tournament after the Christmas break began with a 4-0 win for Mervyn King over Irishman Steve Lennon , followed by a 4-2 win for Ryan Searle over Danny Noppert . Martijn Kleermaker and Joe Cullen faced each other in the last game of the afternoon . Kleermaker quickly took the lead with 3-0 sets and had his first match dart in the fourth set, which he, however, missed. Cullen started a race to catch up and equalized to 3: 3 in sets. After Cullen won seven legs in a row, Kleermaker stopped the run with a 130 finish. He then gave another match dart, but then ended the match with a check-out on the bull's eye. Since Michael van Gerwen also tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 , Chris Dobey moved into the round of 16 without a fight, so only two games took place that evening. Rob Cross from England and Northern Ireland's Daryl Gurney created tension in the first game of the evening. Although Cross quickly took the lead with 2-0 sets, Gurney improved and shortened it to 2: 3 sets. In the following set, Cross missed four match darts and Gurney fought his way into the seventh and decisive set. But the English got the upper hand and won the game with a checkout of 170 points. Cross played the 180 13 times, setting a new record at the time of the tournament. In the second game of the evening, the Scot Peter Wright eliminated the Australian Damon Heta . After Heta won the first two sets, Wright changed his darts, from then on played an average of over 100 points in each set and made it 4: 2 in the round of 16.

On December 29th there was another player, Dave Chisnall , who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 , which is why his opponent Luke Humphries made it to the round of 16 without a fight. In the first game of the day, the Scot Alan Soutar , who was considered an outsider, won against the Portuguese José de Sousa . In the second game, the outsider Callan Rydz prevailed against Nathan Aspinall with 4-0 sets . In the first game of the evening session, Ian White won the first three sets against Gary Anderson , but then the Scot began to catch up. In the sixth set, White threw his matchdart into double 5 instead of double 20 when he led the legs 2-0. Anderson then equalized to 3: 3 in sets and also won the decisive seventh set. The second game of the evening was also the first quarter-final encounter of the tournament. The defending champion Gerwyn Price prevailed against Dirk van Duijvenbode with 4: 1 sets. The last game of the day was a high class match between Jonny Clayton and Michael Smith . Clayton played an average of 102.48 and Smith 99.84 points, and both players threw a total of 25 maxima of 180 points. The game finally went into the seventh set, which Smith won 5-4.

The following day the PDC announced that the world championship would continue despite the many SARS-CoV-2 infections. Previously, Gary Anderson and Gerwyn Price , among others, had pleaded for a postponement after Danny Noppert tested positive as the fifth World Cup participant on the trip home. On the last day of the tournament in 2021, Mervyn King and the only remaining non-European Raymond Smith met . The Australian won the first two sets confidently, but in the third set Smith felt, as he later announced on Twitter, lovesickness because his wife had stayed in Australia. He lost focus on his game, which is why King won the set 3-0. Although Smith still won the fourth set, in the end King emerged victorious from the game. With Callan Rydz and Alan Soutar , two players faced each other, both of whom were playing a World Cup round of 16 for the first time. Soutar won the first set 3-1, but only won a leg in the following set when he checked 110 points. Rydz won the three other sets all 3-0 and advanced to the quarter-finals with 4-1 sets. The last game of midday was played by the two Englishmen Luke Humphries and Chris Dobey , who both made it through to the round of 16 without a fight due to Corona cases from their opponents. But both showed their class, so despite an average of 103 points, Humphries was 0: 2 behind after two sets. In the third set Dobey missed two darts to take the 3-0 lead and Humphries found his way back into the game via a 121 check-out. Humphries succeeded in the same check-out again, but Dobey secured the fourth set for a 3-1 lead. With a total of 14 maxima, Humphries managed to equalize the set 3: 3. In the decisive seventh set he managed a break when the score was 3: 3 legs, ended the game over the double 1 in the eighth leg and then fell relieved to the floor. In the evening, James Wade's victory over the Dutchman Martijn Kleermaker ensured that, for the first time since the 2006 World Cup, only Brits made it to the quarter-finals. Wade lost only four legs in the entire match and won the game 4-0 sets; so he reached the quarter-finals without throwing a 180 in the tournament so far. In the second game of the evening session, Gary Anderson had to go into the seventh set against Rob Cross, as in the previous round. Cross won the first set, but then the Scot turned the game to a 3-1 lead. Anderson managed the fourth 170 finish of the tournament in the third set. Cross, who fell out at 81 points in the meantime, found his way back into the game and equalized to 3: 3 in the sets. In the seventh set, Anderson managed a break to make it 2-1. He then converted his fourth match dart to double-20. Anderson's compatriot Peter Wright had few problems in the last encounter of the day, in which he beat Ryan Searle 4-1 and thus completed the quarter-finals.

After a day of rest on December 31st, the World Championship continued on New Year's Eve in two sessions with the quarter-finals. In the lunchtime session, James Wade won 5-0 against Mervyn King . Gary Anderson qualified as the second player with a 5-2 win over Luke Humphries for the semifinals. The two quarter-finals in the evening session were particularly exciting. Callan Rydz from England and the Scot Peter Wright met in the first game . Rydz secured the first set 3-0 and an average of 111.24 points. The Englishman also won the second set 3-0. He checked 106, 106 and 105 points. After Wright secured the third set, Rydz increased to 3: 1, before the Scot reduced it again to 3: 2 with a set average of 110.26 points. In the sixth set Peter Wright equalized and missed a nine dart finish by one dart . After six legdarts in a row from Wright, Rydz increased again to 4: 3. But Wright forced a ninth sentence in which his opponent showed nerves. In the end, Wright won the set with 4-2 legs and moved into the final as the third player with a personal record of seventeen 180s. In the game between Welsh Gerwyn Price and Michael Smith from England, it was again over nine sets. In the fourth set, the reigning world champion played the third nine dart finish of the world championship. With a score of 4: 3 for Price, he felt disturbed by heckling, which is why he briefly interrupted his throw and complained to the caller George Noble. After this incident, the Welshman never found his way back into the game and Smith completed the field in the semifinals.

mode

The tournament was played in the best of sets mode and the double-out variant .

The player who won three legs first won a set . The first player to throw exactly 501 points won a leg . The last throw of a leg had to be on a double field.

Unlike in 2021, when the score was 2: 2 legs in a crucial final set, the two-clear legs rule applied. If no player managed to get a lead of 4: 2, 5: 3 or 6: 4 legs , the set went up to a maximum of 5: 5 legs . The subsequent eleventh leg was played as the so-called Sudden Death Leg . Games in the 1st round were excluded from this; there, when the score was 2: 2 legs, the fifth leg of each set decided .
