The first generation Presage was launched by Nissan in June 1998 to compete with Honda Odyssey and Toyota Estima . It was available with seven or eight seats and an optional all-wheel drive . Many components of the car were carried over from the Nissan R'nessa , although some components are also from the superseded Nissan Bassara .
The models with front-wheel drive are equipped with an electronic brake force distribution system, which distributes the brake force electronically and optimally between the front and rear wheels depending on the load. This system is coupled with a brake assistant to ensure that the braking force is used effectively and that the pedal pressure is reduced. This results in better braking performance when the necessary pedal pressure is reduced in critical situations, even if the vehicle is heavily loaded. In the case of versions with all-wheel drive, the system works on the same principle, but the braking force distribution is carried out mechanically with a load-dependent control. Thus, approximately the same braking power is achieved. All rear seats can be folded up, but only the second row of seats can be removed from the car.
Available the presage was equipped with a 3.0 liter V-6 gasoline engine, and two in-line four cylinders: a 2.4-liter gasoline engine and a turbo-diesel engine with 2.5 liter displacement. A four- speed automatic was used as the transmission .
In the course of a model upgrade in August 2001, the four-cylinder was removed from the range and replaced by a petrol engine with a displacement of 2.5 liters, which was also designed as an inline four-cylinder. In addition, minor visual changes have been made and the sporty Highway Star equipment variant has been added.

The U31 offered a convertible seating configuration with seven or eight seats and the rear side doors were now designed as sliding doors. A reversing camera was offered to make resetting easier . Again there was a sporty variant called Highway Star .
Only two petrol engines were available as motorization. An in-line four-cylinder with a displacement of 2.5 liters in combination with an automatic transmission with four gears and a 3.5-liter V6, which was only available with a continuously variable transmission , were on offer. As with the previous model, an optional all-wheel drive was also available for the U31.
