history

The Gallic Segodunum on the Tabula Peutingeriana

Rodez goes to the Gallic settlement Segodunum from the 5th century BC. BC, the main town of the Rutener . In Roman times the place was called Ruthena civitas . It was on the northern border of the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis . Rodez has been the seat of the diocese of Rodez since the 4th century , which was restored by Saint Amans in the 5th century .

Rodez belonged successively to the Empire of the Visigoths , the Franks , the Duchy of Aquitaine and the County of Toulouse . The church was destroyed by the Moors in 725. The following period was marked by the rivalry between the bishops and the Counts of Rodez and Armagnac , who came to terms with the antipope Benedict XIII. allies. Under Bishop François d'Estaing , the construction of the cathedral was completed at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1589, King Henry IV firmly linked the county with France. In 1792 the measuring teams from Dunkirk and Barcelona met in Rodez to determine the length of the meter . in the 19th century there was a cultural and economic boom.

Attractions

Notre Dame Cathedral
  • The Notre-Dame Cathedral in Rodez is one of the small group of Gothic buildings in southern France. The start of construction was relatively late in 1277, and construction dragged on for a very long time. The nave was not finished until the middle of the 16th century. The massive west side differs significantly from the cathedrals in Chartres or Reims . This is because the church was outside the city wall at the time of construction and therefore had to serve as a defense. Especially the lower half of the western outer front still shows the defensive character. The central portal is also missing; To compensate for this, the upper part is highlighted by a huge tracery window and a renaissance gable.

The front side is therefore the north facade, which, however, cannot be compared with buildings in the north of France. An innovation in Gothic architecture can be observed in the interior of the cathedral . It is characteristic of a cathedral in the late Gothic that pillars and services are merged into wave-shaped curves and the capital zone is now indicated exclusively by lines. If possible, the pillars should go through as vertical, linear elements from the base to the capital.

The wall elevation in turn blends the pillar with the wall. The triforium has a rectangular frame, like an isolated geometric element. These are also late forms of the Gothic, at a time when the Renaissance had actually long since arrived in France - namely since around 1490.

The Museum Musée Fenaille shows u. a. Statuettes from prehistoric times.
