history

St. Martin's Church

Sedlčany is one of the oldest settlements in Central Bohemia. It was created in the High Middle Ages during colonization by the Přemyslids . The parish church of St. Martin was built after 1275. In 1294 Sedlčany was called a market village and was owned by Ulrich II von Neuhaus . In 1337 the Bohemian King John of Bohemia pledged Sedlčany to his Chamberlain Peter I von Rosenberg . In 1353 it was elevated to the status of a town that formed the Rosenberg manorial system, to which three small towns and 15 villages belonged around 1370. For the year 1379, 18 meat shops and several cloth makers are recorded. Under Ulrich II von Rosenberg , Sedlčany received privileges in 1418 that corresponded to those of a royal town. Although Ulrich was on the side of Emperor Sigismund , the population supported the Four Prague Articles during the Hussite Wars . After several landed gentlemen were executed in Sedlčany in 1425, it fell to the Taborites for a short time . After the death of their father Johann Popel von Lobkowitz in 1470, Děpolt von Lobkowitz and his siblings made claims on Rosenberg , which had been pledged to their father by Johann II von Rosenberg in 1464 to settle debts. In 1475 they were pawned Sedlčany instead. After the debts had been settled, Sedlčany returned to the Rosenbergs. The city hospital is proven for the year 1524.

In 1580 Wilhelm von Rosenberg exchanged Sedlčany and Křepenice with his economic manager Jakob Krčín von Jelčany , from whom he received the large game reserve and the Rohn ( Leptáč ) farm near Netolice , on which he built the Kratochvíle Castle . Jakob Krčín built a brewery and a large mill in Sedlčany. When he died in 1604 without male heirs, his possessions reverted to the last Rosenberg, Peter Wok . He sold the Sedlčany estate to the Bohemian Chancellor Zdeněk Vojtěch von Lobkowicz , who carried out the violent recatholicization . Sedlčany did not recover from the devastation caused by the Swedes in the Thirty Years' War until the middle of the 18th century. From the 19th century onwards, in addition to agriculture, the factory production of textiles was of economic importance. In 1894 Sedlčany got a railway connection.
