Walkringen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

geography

Walkringen lies at 708  m above sea level. M. , 13 km east of the canton capital Bern (linear distance). The village extends on the northeastern edge of the Walkringenmoos , at the upper entrance to the Bigental , between the ridge of Mänziwilegg in the west and Adlisberg in the east.

The area of the 17.2 km² large municipality covers a section of the hill country between the Aare valley and the Emmental . The southern part of the community is occupied by the Walkringenmoos , a flat area of around 1 km². There was still a lake on this level in the Middle Ages , but it gradually silted up, was later drained and is now cultivated. The Walkringenmoos is traversed by the Biglenbach , a left tributary of the Emme .

The main part of the municipality is located in the north adjoining, heavily relief hill country. The central axis is the Bigental, which runs from south to north, with a valley floor that is usually around 300 m wide. The mountain ranges on both sides of this valley have a characteristic relief: They are subdivided by numerous short valleys and protruding ridges (so-called harrows). The often very steep slopes are predominantly forest-covered or with pastureland. To the west of the Bigental, the border runs across the forest heights of Lüseberg ( 925  m above sea level ), Mänziwilegg ( 934  m above sea level ) and Dachsflue ( 911  m above sea level ). A large part of the Widimattgraben between Dachsflue and Wägesse ( 900  m above sea level ) also belongs to Walkringen. To the east of the Biglenbach valley basin, the municipality extends to the heights of Adlisberg ( 909  m above sea level ), Nünhaupt (at 970  m above sea level, the highest point in Walkringen), into the extensive Brandis Forest ( 951  m above sea level) . ) and in the upper catchment area of the valley trench . In 1997, 6% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 37% for forests and woodlands and 56% for agriculture; a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

  • Wikartswil ( 772  m above sea level ) in a panoramic location on the southern slope of the Lüseberg above the Walkringenmoos
  • Rüttihubelbad ( 735  m above sea level ) in a panoramic location on the southern slope of the Lüseberg above the Walkringenmoos
  • Niderwil ( 727  m above sea level ) on the southern slope of the Mänziwilegg above the Walkringenmoos
  • Metzgerhüsi ( 699  m above sea level ) on the southeast edge of the Walkringen moss
  • Schwändi ( 848  m above sea level ) at the height between the Bigental and the valley ditch

economy

Walkringen was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Agriculture , dairy farming and cattle breeding still play an important role in the income structure of the population today . Numerous other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In Walkringen today there are companies in the building trade, agricultural machinery construction, metal construction, mechanical workshops, joineries, sawmills and car garages. The Rüttihubelbad is now a run on the basis of anthroposophy social, cultural and conference center or nursing home. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many employees are therefore commuters who work mainly in the larger towns in the area and in the agglomeration of Bern.

traffic

The community is very well developed in terms of traffic. It lies on a main road that leads from Burgdorf via Grosshöchstetten to Thun . On July 21, 1899, the railway line from Hasle-Rüegsau to Thun was opened with stations in Walkringen and Bigenthal. A Postbus course , which serves the route from Worb via Rüttihubelbad to Walkringen, ensures the fine distribution in public transport .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1220 under the name Walchenringin . The names Walkeringen (1234), Walchenrengen (1239), Walgeringen , Waltgeringen (1314), Walcringen (1384) and Walkringen (1389) appeared later . The place name goes back to the Old High German personal name Walheri or Waldger and therefore means for the people of Walheri / Waldger .

Since the 13th century Walkringen belonged to the Worb rule, which was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Kyburg . In 1397 the village was donated to the Thorberg Charterhouse. From 1406 it was under the sovereignty of the city of Bern. After the secularization of the monastery (1528), the area was administered by a governor residing on Thorberg. The high level of jurisdiction lay with the Konolfingen Regional Court.

The northern part of the community with Bigenthal experienced a different story: It belonged to the Emmental district court Ranflüh and from the early 16th century to the mayor's office in Burgdorf.

After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), both parts were united and belonged to the Höchstetten district during the Helvetic period and from 1803 to the Konolfingen Oberamt, which was given the status of an administrative district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. Through the amelioration of the Walkringen moss and the construction of locks and drainage ditches, fertile cultivated land was gained in 1860.

Attractions

The reformed parish church of Walkringen was built in late Gothic styles. Numerous characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the old town center and in the hamlets of Wikartswil and Schwändi.
