The 2. Bundesliga 2020/21 is set to be the 47th season of the second highest German division in men's football . It is scheduled to open on September 18, 2020 and end on May 23, 2021 with the 34th matchday. The relegation games are scheduled to take place between May 26th and 30th, 2021. From December 22, 2020 to January 1, 2021, the season is to be interrupted by a shortened winter break. There will be three English weeks. A total of 306 league and four relegation games are to be completed. It was originally due to open on July 31, 2020 and end on May 16, 2021.

Since the pre-season game operations were interrupted for several weeks between March 11 and May 16, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the international club competitions of the same season are not due to end until August 2020, the postponements became necessary.

Special features due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Due to the postponement of the end of the 2019/20 season and the start of the 2020/21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the DFB, together with the DFL and in consultation with FIFA, adjusted the summer transfer period (generally July 1 to August 31). The transfer window is open on July 1st (changeover period I.1) and from July 15 to October 5, 2020 (changeover period I.2). The first, one-day phase is intended in particular for the registration of contracts that have already been concluded starting on July 1st.
