The Berufsgenossenschaftliche Universitätsklinikum Bergmannsheil gGmbH is a non-state university clinic at the University Clinic of the Ruhr University in Bochum . It belongs to the BG Kliniken group of companies .

history

Construction and early years

Bergmannsheil (then: Bergbau-Berufsgenossenschaftliche Krankenanstalten Bergmannsheil ) was established between 1888 and 1890 as a special clinic for accident care for miners in the Ruhr area. It is considered the oldest accident clinic in the world. Responsible was the mining trade association (at that time Knappschafts trade association), which wanted to react to the high number of accidents in the Ruhr mining industry at the time .

The special accident medicine orientation of the clinic was a novelty at that time and expressed itself in many ways: For example, so that injured persons could be transported to the clinic as quickly as possible and cared for there, an ambulance was provided from the beginning - initially pulled by horses, later motorized. Since 1892 there has been a so-called "medico-mechanical institute" that helped to improve the follow-up treatment and rehabilitation of accident patients. In 1896 the establishment of an " X-ray cabinet" followed, whereby this very young diagnostic method was used in miners' health.

War time and destruction

During and after the First World War , Bergmannsheil treated many wounded soldiers and war casualties. Since 1918 prostheses for amputee patients have been manufactured in our own orthopedic workshop. In 1919 a prosecution and in 1920 an "interior and nerve department" were set up, which in 1929 moved into its own building. The prosecution was later transferred to the Institute for Pathology at the Ruhr University Bochum at the Bergmannsheil University Clinic. In addition, an own pharmacy and a nursing school were set up, and the core surgical area was restructured.

During the Second World War , the Todt Organization built a system of tunnels to protect against air raids . The hospital was completely destroyed on the night of bombing on November 4, 1944.

reconstruction

After the reconstruction, which was financed, among other things, by offsetting coal that had been found during the construction of the tunnels against building materials, the medical spectrum was expanded even further: Examples include the Department for Paraplegics (1952) and the Establishment of a department for severe burn injuries (1964), today's clinic for plastic surgery and severe burn injuries. In addition, departments for anesthesia , radiology and nuclear medicine were established, as well as several departments for internal medicine . These became increasingly important, differentiated and developed into independent departments and clinics. This went hand in hand with the change in the Bergmannsheil patient clientele and its development from a special to a general hospital. The background was formed by the mining crisis and the death of collieries: along with the number of employees in the mining sector, the number of occupational accidents also fell continuously, and the steadily improved accident prevention and occupational safety measures of the employers' liability insurance association did the rest. The clinic increasingly opened up to other patient groups - albeit without losing sight of its historically established focus on surgery and accident medicine. Today Bergmannsheil is a hospital with maximum standard of care.

Bergmannsheil has been a university clinic of the Ruhr University Bochum since 1977 as part of the Bochum model . This “Bochum model”, which was initially started as a temporary solution with other Bochum hospitals and instead of the originally planned campus clinic, ensured medical training for the Medical Faculty of the Ruhr University, was finally declared a permanent solution. Through the connection to the medical faculty, Bergmannsheil was able to continue and intensify its activities in science and research in a university context.

Since January 1, 2007, after the change of legal form, Bergmannsheil has been operating as “Berufsgenossenschaftliches Universitätsklinikum Bergmannsheil GmbH”, and on January 1, 2016, the name was changed to “Berufsgenossenschaftliches Universitätsklinikum Bergmannsheil gGmbH”. On the same day, Bergmannsheil was taken over by transferring 74.9% of the shares from the shareholders to the parent company as a subsidiary in the newly founded group "BG Kliniken - Clinic Association of Statutory Accident Insurance GmbH".

expansion

A new eight-story ward block, the construction costs of which amounted to around 50 million euros, was opened in December 2006. The house, which towers above all other buildings, provides 2 helipads, 253 beds with a very high level of comfort and 41 beds for intensive surveillance. This building, as well as the entire clinic, was largely financed by its former sponsor, the mining trade association, which was the statutory accident insurance for all German mining entrepreneurs. In January 2010 it merged with other trade associations to form today's trade association for raw materials and the chemical industry (BG RCI).

In April 2008, the construction of a multi-storey research building between buildings 2 and 10 began. The four-storey, cube-shaped extension adjoins house 10 and was completed in November 2009. He belongs to the Institute for Prevention and Occupational Medicine of the German Social Accident Insurance , an institute of the Ruhr University Bochum (IPA).

In September 2010 the groundbreaking ceremony was held for the construction of a new functional wing and bed block at Bergmannsheil. The new functional wing was built between Buildings 1 and 3 and contains an interdisciplinary emergency room, an operating theater, new and expanded intensive care capacities and functional facilities. The old bed block 2 was also torn down, making way for a new building. The construction project will be implemented in two construction phases. The first construction phase was inaugurated in June 2013. The second construction phase was completed in 2018. The construction costs for the entire project amount to approx. 150 million euros, which are borne by the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) and Bergmannsheil.

With the merger of the nine professional association acute clinics of the statutory accident insurance, Bergmannsheil became part of the BG Kliniken group on January 1, 2016 .

Major fire on September 30, 2016

On the night of September 29 to 30, 2016, a suicidal fire started by a patient destroyed several floors and the roof of Ward 1, which opened in 1986. Two people were killed and seven seriously injured. The Bochum professional firefighter and spokesman for the German fire brigade union Udo Lipp later criticized that there were far too few firefighters on site in the first phase, so that a coordinated fire fighting attack was not possible. The responsible head of the city of Bochum, Dirk Hagebölling, contradicted this criticism.

As a result of the fire, six wards with a total of 200 beds, which corresponds to a little more than a quarter of the hospital's total capacity, were lost. The loss was initially partially offset by temporarily relocating two wards ( pain medicine and parts of the neurology) to the Börnig house of the Marien Hospital in Herne . A replacement bed house (house 51) on the site of a former employee car park has been completed since 2018. How to proceed with the heavily damaged House 1 has not been publicly announced two years after the fire (as of October 2018).

facts and figures

Up to 707 inpatients are treated at the same time in 23 different clinics and specialist departments. Bergmannsheil has four specialized intensive care units , an interdisciplinary intermediate care unit and 18 normal wards, as well as an emergency room , several polyclinics and various special outpatient departments . In this way, the clinic ensures a broad, highly differentiated spectrum of medical service areas. Bergmannsheil is certified as a supra-regional trauma center and is a founding member of the Ruhr Area Trauma Network. Approx. The Bergmannsheil Clinic treats 70,000 outpatients and around 20,000 inpatients every year; there are over 10,000 operations, almost 3,000 ambulances and 250 helicopter approaches every year. Critique of the Science Council 2019

In an expert opinion on the status of university medicine in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2019 , the Science Council expressed extensive criticism of the way in which Bergmannsheil was integrated into the Medical Faculty of the Ruhr University Bochum (as well as the overall structure of the UK RUB). As clinics not owned by the state, the medical faculty, the university and the state are not supposed to participate in the management and supervisory board of the hospital, as is actually necessary for a university hospital. Synergy effects with the other UK RUB locations were insufficient. In addition, research and teaching as well as innovations and quality assurance would be hindered.
