Brenda B. Jones (born October 24, 1959 in Birmingham , Alabama , United States ) is an American politician . As a member of the Democratic Party , she held the 13th seat of the Michigan state in the United States House of Representatives from November 6, 2018 to January 3, 2019 .

Life

Brenda Jones was born on October 24, 1959 in Birmingham , Alabama . Her father moved to Detroit during the Great Migration . She attended school in Detroit and graduated from Cass Technical High School . She received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Wayne State University .

Professional career

Jones worked for Michigan Bell , owned by AT&T , and was elected Detroit president of the Communications Workers of America union . She was a board member of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation and the Detroit Transportation Commission .

Political career

In 2005, Brenda Jones was elected to Detroit City Council and in 2014 she was elected President of the Council against Saunteel Jenkins.

Following the resignation of John Conyers from the House of Representatives in 2017, a special Michigan election was held in 2018 to fill the 13th state Michigan seat in the United States House of Representatives . Jones won the Democratic primary for that particular election with 37.7 percent of the vote against Rashida Tlaib , who got 35.9 percent.

In the special election for the 13th seat of the state of Michigan in the United States' House of Representatives on November 6, 2018, Brenda Jones won against Marc Joseph Sosnowski of the Constitution Party ( US Taxpayers ) with 8.9 percent of the vote. Third place went to D. Etta Wilcoxon from the Green Party with 4.3 percent of the vote.

The Democratic Party's regular primary, also held on August 7, 2018, was lost to Jones by Rashida Tlaib. Since Rashida Tlaib won the regular election, Tlaib has held the 13th seat for Michigan in the United States House of Representatives since January 2019.
