Casteggio is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 6731 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Pavia in Lombardy . The municipality is located about 20 kilometers south-southwest of Pavia .
history
Casteggio goes back historically to the Gallic settlement of Clastidium . In the years 223 and 222 BC the city is subjected to Roman rule. Hannibal's passage a few years later did not leave the settlement untouched. This is where the Battle of Clastidium took place. The Via Emilia still runs through the town today.
In the late Middle Ages the toponym shifted from Clastidium to Chiastitium , Chiastezzio and finally Chiasteggio .

traffic
North of the village, the A21 autostrada runs from Turin to Brescia in a west-east direction . The Strada Statale 10 Padana Inferiore also runs through the municipality. The former Strada Statale 35 dei Giovi leads towards Pavia . The station is on the Alessandria – Piacenza railway line .
Districts
In the municipality, in addition to the main town, are the fractions Fonderia, Mairano and Rivetta, as well as the residential areas Borghetto, Canova, Caretta, Crotesi, Torchio and Tronconero.
Viticulture
The red wine of the same name with a protected designation of origin ( DOC ) is produced here. The wine must be at least 65% of the grape Barbera made. A maximum of 35% Croatina , Uva Rara , Vespolina (Ughetta) and Pinot Nero may be added. Cultivation is permitted in Casteggio and in the surrounding municipalities of Borgo Priolo , Corvino San Quirico , Montebello della Battaglia , Calvignano , Oliva Gessi and Torrazza Coste . The denomination has been around since 2010; it was updated on March 7, 2014.
